I by bob morello reviewing the best. forgetting the rest ,j THE MUSIC OF NASHVILLE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK Big Machine Records It comes as no surprise that the success of the tele- vision show Nashville, can be found in the show's music soundtrack. The popularity of country music enhances the entertainment value on the soundtrack from Season 3, Volume 1. Chris Carmack (Will) sets the pace with the tender strains of If It's Love, trailed by the show's co-stars, Connie Britton's (Rayna) upbeat Lies of the Lonely and Hayden Panet- tiere's (Juliette) painful Dis- appear, with the duet of Clare Bowen (Scarlett) and Mykelti Williamson (Terry) delivering Carry On. The fiery Gasoline and Matches from Britton and Laura Benanti (Sadie) sparks the mood, plus the pretty ballad by Chip Esten (Deacon) titled I Know How to Love You Now, as Carmack and Aubrey Peeples (Layla) maintain the mood via If Your Heart Can Handle It. The complimen- tary The Most Beautiful Girl in the World comes from Jonathan Jackson (Avery), Sam Palladio (Gunnar} and Chaley Rose (Zoey), while Will Chase (Luke) explodes with Good Woman -- Good to Me, and the finale has Palladio and Bowen duet on the tender When You Open Your Eyes. Doesn't get better than this! AC/DC - ROCK OR BUST, Columbia Records Classic rockers AC/DC are rewarding fans old and new, by putting a charge into some new music on their first album of new material in six years. The group's 11-song offering will give their fans some great tracks, plus invite a whole new generation of listeners. The album's title track Rock or Bust is explosive in the sense that it stirs up great memories of the group's past work, in a new scenario, along with the teamwork cut Play Ball, the rocking' Rock the Blues Away, and the unlady like Miss Adventure. The biting Dogs of War maintains the mood, fol- lowed by the questioning Got Some Rock & Roll Thunder, the driving Hard Times, and the blasting Baptism by Fire. The mind blowing Rock the House lives up to its title, trailed by the non- sugary Sweet Candy, and the exhaust of Emission Con- trol. Excellent collection to showcase this band whose loyal following deserves this timely gift of a new releasel THE HOMESMAN - ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK Var~se Sarabande Records Director Tommy Lee Jones drew on the vast experience of Award-winning composer Marco Beltrami to compose the score for his feature The Homesman. In their third collaboration together, Beltrami showed his unique- ness by taking his talents outdoor to record the music for this movie score, on the mountains of Malibu, Cali- fornia. The result is 21 tracks of music composed for this exciting film that stars Hilary Swank and Jones, along with the three women (Grace Gummer, Miranda Otto, Sonja Richter) and the legend called Meryl Streep. The Hollywood Studio Sym- phony performed the music for the score, and it under- scores Beltrami's multiple talents, and why he has been nominated for two Academy Awards in his career. ELMER BERNSTEIN: THE WILD SIDE Var~se Sarabande Records Composer Elmer Bernstein is celebrated with the re- lease of Elmer Bernstein: The Wild Side. This special recording focuses on the jazz and big band scores from the acclaimed composer, from films as The Man with the Golden Arm, (1955), Johnny Staccato, (1959), Devil in a Blue Dress, (1995), and Walk on the Wild Side (1962). Also included is music from The Rat Race (1960), Saints and Sinners (1962), The Age of Innocence (1963), The Caretakers (1963), The Silencers (1966), Ghostbusters, (1984), and Sweet Smell of Success (1957). Big Band De Canarias, conducted by Kike Perdomo (Saxophone) and featured guest performers Esther Ovejero's vocals, and the work of flute player Sara Andon performed the music. In a spectacular 50-plus year career with over 200 film scores to his credit, shows why Elmer Bernstein was truly a living legendr THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES WaterTower Music Howard Shore is one of film music's most respected, honored, and active com- posers and conductors. With The Battle of Five Armies, Shore makes his final musical voyage to Middle- earth -- concluding his work with Director Peter Jackson on both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. The soundtrack also contains an original song performed by Billy Boyd, who starred as Peregrin Took in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The song The Last Goodbye was co-written by Boyd with filmmakers Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. The soundtrack set contains a pair of discs, with Disc One containing 11 tracks, and Disc Two, with an additional ten cuts. Once again, Acad- emy Award-winner Shore has created the perfect original music to carry off J.R.R. Tolkien's finale of her enduringly popular master- piece The Hobbit trilogyI The time has come, the walrus said, TO TALK OF MANY THINGS of shoes and ships and sealing wax of cabbages and kings by Sal Giarratani Bishop Alan Gates of the Episcopal Diocese of Mas- sachusetts is not just the new bishop of this diocese, he is also a North End resi- dent as well. Recently, caught up with him by the North End firehouse on his way home with a batch of good looking Christmas cookies. HAPPY IST ANNIVERSARY CHRISTIAN For information about advertising in the Post-Gazette, call 617-227-8929, QUOTE TO NOTE "Wh'en traffic tickets are used to promote revenue, that's inappropriate." -- Chris Koster, Missouri Attorney General Sometimes, I don't think this attitude is a prevailing one here in Massachusetts' cities and towns, do you? DOWN AT MACY'S CULTURE WARS? Recently, I saw an adver- tisement for Macy's in the paper one morning. The magic of Macy's was pushing a sale on various items including "Ideology Active- wear" which was described as a 1/4-zip fleece pullover. I guess liberals purchase the blue ones and conserva- tive, of course, go red. Can we just keep politics out of our clothing? After all, aren't those stupid placards bad enough already? YOU GOTTA TRY JACKS RISTORANTE Recently, I tasted the goods at Jacks Restaurant on Route 60 in Malden. It is owned by Jack Colangeli who is also the Malden Fire Chief. While I was there I also bumped into another friend Malden Police Chief Kevin Molls who loves the great Italian food on the menu here. Jack's motto is, "Good food, good wine, good friends." That just about says it all. The night I was there dining with a good friend of mine known to all his friends as Johnny Two Dogs, he had the Chicken Colangeli named after the owner and I ordered the smothered pork chops.
