Spaceman Bill Lee just celebrated his 68th birthday the other day. Hard to be- lieve, isn't it? Anthony Del Prete Named Head Coach at Suffolk East Boston's Anthony Del Prete has been tapped as head baseball coach at Suffolk University for the 2015 season and will also serve as assistant director of the school's athletic depart- ment. He will become just the sixth baseball coach in the baseball program's 68 year history. Del Prete has been serving as an assistant coach for the past 10 years. He graduated from Suffolk University, and in his four seasons on the mound back in his student days, he went 21-11 helping to guide the Suffolk Rams to a 2002 NCAA Tournament appear- ance and was named Great Northeast Athletic Confer- ence Tournament MVP. Kudos go out to Anthony Del Prete and best of luck in 2015 for Suffolk University and the Rams under his helm. Did You Know? Over the last six seasons, four pitchers have allowed more hits than innings pitched. Among the four include new Red Sox pitcher Rick Porcello. I guess he isn't going to be the ace of the 2015 rotation, huh? Why is Number 21 So Sacred? When new guy Rick Porcello wanted to take his number 21 with him to Boston, he was told he couldn't out of respect to Roger Clemens. That num- ber is off limits, even Clemens is yet to get into the Hall of Fame because of steroid allegations However, Wade Boggs' number 26 is up for grabs. He unlike Clemens is in the Hall of Fame and wear- ing a Red Sox cap too. So what gives here? Pirates Hold onto Liriano It appears that Francisco Liriano is staying in Pitts- burgh and getting a three- year, $39 million deal. The 31-year-old lefty joined the Pirates for the 2013 season and was 16-8 with a 3.02 ERA. Last year he dropped to 7-10 with a 3.38 ERA. Pitchers are getting lots of money right now because good and near-good pitchers are quite in demand. Astros Building a New Bullpen The Houston Astros are building a strong bullpen for 2015 by agreeing to an $18.5 million, 2-year deal with Luke Gregerson and a 2- year, $12.5 million pact with Pat Neshek. Gergerson, 30, spent five years with the Padres, then went 5-5 with a 2.12 ERA for Oakland last season. Neshek, 34, played for the Twins, Padres, Ath- letics and the Cardinals last season when he struck out 68 in 67 innings and ended up being an All-Star too. Pirates Get Bastardo from Philly Lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo is now headed to the Pirates from Philly for Minor League player Joely Rodriguez. Bastardo, 29, went 4-7 with a 3.94 ERA in 2014. In six seasons, with Philadelphia, he is 20-18 with a 3.72 ERA and 324 strikeouts in 259 innings. News Brief (Continued from Page i) Is Gun Control the Answer Here? According to the NAACP, talking about a war on cops motivated by race-baiting is mere "conjecture." They say the killing of those two cops is an "example of the need for strict gun-control mea- sures." WITNESS, HON. EDWARD F. DONNELLY, JR., First Justice of this Court Date: December 30, 2014 Tara E. DeCristofaro, Register of Prorate Run datet/9/15 in America's larger cities is a crime problem and not a race problem. Right here in Boston, there is a move to declare the killing zones of some Boston neighborhoods to be a public health crisis when it is a public safety problem. The only folks crime is a public health cri- sis for are the victims of this endless and meaningless violence According to the NAACP, two cops died because ,we need: sensible gun control J measures." They believe the ,two officers were killed not beCaUse of racial arsonists of lence " - but because the tour- derer had access to a gun. As far as I am concerned, I blame Al Sharpton, Bill De Blasio, Eric Holder and even President Obama for putting cross-hairs on the backs of police officers of all colors, ethnic backgrounds and races. As Investors Business Daily opined, "This is not a race issue or a gun control issue. It's a goon-control issue and a cop killer issue as well." Boston& New York Strong "Boston and New York ... we are pretty close. They've al- ways been there for us. We've been there for them. Whether it was 9/11 or whether it was the Marathon." -- Patrick Rose, BPD officer and new presi- dent of the Boston Police Patrolmen' s Association It Shouldn't Have Taken 20 Long Years Thousands of female mili- tary veterans continue to struggle getting health care from the VA system on the grounds that they suffer from PTSD caused by sexual trauma in the service. These veterans call it a second battle with a bureaucracy caught up in the past. I read of Judy Atwood-BeU who was~a~19-year-old Army privat~ when she was sexu- ally assaulted and raped by another soldier. For more than two decades, she fought for an apology and compen- sation for PTSD, with panic attacks, depression and insomnia that started not long after that 1981 assault. She filed all the paper work several times over. Recently, Atwood-Bell found out that the VA finally accepted her claim. She said, "It's taken over 20 years and that should've never happened. My fight is not over. It's not done for so many other women out there. I want to help them get what we are entitled to."
