POST-GAZE'I-rE, JANUARY 15, 2016 PAGE 5 Ron Della Chiesa o A Frank De Paso uale Venture c~ Radio My Way Book Signing The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA), Culture & .................................... Historical Commission will be ................................. hosting a dinner and book signing with Boston broadcasting icon Ron Della Chiesa on Thursday evening, February 25, 2016, at the Neighborhood Club (27 Glendale Road, Quincy). A "walking musical encyclo- pedia" for close to four decades, Ron has brought his passion for music to the airwaves on WBUR, WBOS, WBCN, WGBH, and WPLM, hosting shows including Classics in the Morning, Morning Pro Musica, the hugely popular MusicAmerica and, of course, his trademark program, Strictly Sinatra. Ron currently serves as host of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at both Boston and Tangiewood. The evening will include cocktails and dinner, complete with a roast beef carving station, beginning at 6:00 pm and will be highlighted by Ron speaking on Frank Sinatra's 100a Birthday as well as his book, Radio My Way. The book covers over 40 years of broadcasting, through interviews with Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Dizzy Gillespie, Rosemary Clooney, Bobby Short, Andre Previn, and his close friend, musical legend Tony Bennett. Ron grew up in Quincy, where his passion for radio and broadcast began. At home in the '40s, his father, Aldo, sang arias, and the voices of the great Italian tenors, Caruso, Lanza, and Gigli, were on the radio. After Aldo brought ten-year-old Ron to his first opera, young Ron promptly set up a makeshift radio studio at home, reading news, taping music, and imitating his favorite radio personalities. There was no stopping his love affair with music and broadcasting that continues to this day. Busy holiday schedules in November and December contributed to about 1,700 fewer blood drives held across the country compared to the two previous months, which has resulted in about 50,000 fewer donations and reduced the blood supply. Donation ap- pointments can be quickly and easily scheduled by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting the web site at redcrossblood.org, or by calling 1-800-733-2767. For the ninth year, the Red Cross and Dunkin' Donuts are partnering in January to help in- crease donations and reward generous donors during National Blood Donor Month. Through the "Dunkin' Donors Make a Difference" campaign, all those who come to give blood or platelets in January at Red Cross blood drives in Con- necticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and parts of New York will receive a $5 Dunkin' Donuts gift card. National Blood Donor Month has been ob- served in January since 1970 with the goal of increasing blood donations during the winter -- one of the most difficult times of year to col- lect enough blood and platelet donations to meet patient needs. In addition to winter bring- ing busy holiday schedules for many regu- lar donors, severe winter weather can cancel blood drives, and seasonal illnesses, like the flu, nt a Winter ortage may cause donors to be temporarily unable to give. Blood and platelet donors of all blood types are urged to make an appointment to donate for patients like Pyper Young, now 7 years old. The chemotherapy that treated Pyper's brain cancer also caused her to need emergency transfusions to increase her blood levels. The Red Cross must collect about 14,000 donations every day to meet the needs of patients like Vyper.
