He hit his 3,000 th ball in the final game of the 1971 season knowing little that it would be his very last hit. During the 1971 World Series against the Orioles, he led his team to the Series win and had a .414 average with two homers.and four RBIs winning the World Series MVP. Over his career, he hit .317 with 240 homers and 1.305 RBIs, 12 Golden Glove Awards and the 1966 NL MVP Award. He was a GREAT PLAYER because he took nothing for granted and kept working to improve his skills. Also in 14 World Series games over his ca- reer, he hit an amazing .362. Following his untimely death at 37 years old, the standard Hall of Fame's five- year waiting period was waved and he was inducted into Cooperstown in the summer of 1973. In 2003, President George W. Bush presented Clemente posthu- mously with the Presiden- tial Medal of Honor. In the Steroid Age that would soil baseball some two decades later, Clemente rep- resented an era that made America proud of this' sport. He once said, "I believe we owe something to the people who watch us play. When I put on my uniform ... I am the proudest man on Earth."
