Page 6 POST-GAZETTE, JANUARY 21,2011 THE FLAME AND FURY OF FLEET STREET Welterweight Champion of the World Tony DeMarco Exhibit Unveiled by Ellen Zappala The new Tony DeMarco exhibit was unveiled on Tuesday evening, Janu- ary 18t , at a gala event at TheSports Museum located in the TD Garden. Invited guests were treated to the first look at fabulous memorabilia from the collection of former Welterweight Champion of the World Tony DeMarco. Known as the "Flame and Fury of Fleet Street," North End native DeMarco won the undisputed welterweight championship on April 1, 1955 when he knocked out Johnny Saxton in the 14 th round at the Boston Garden. His fights with Carmen Basilio are considered two of the greatest matches of all time. Along with the unveiling, a reception was held at The Sports Museum with former state auditor Joe DeNucci as keynote speaker. Tony DeMarco thanked everyone in attendance, and also thanked fans across New En- gland for their support over the years. Over the course of his great career, DeMarco fought, at the Boston Garden twenty-eight times, making it the perfect venue for the public to view his collection. DeMarco's championship belt, as well as his gloves and robe are just a few of the wonderful pieces of boxing history on display. The exhibit was made possible by the Gemelli Family, Donato Frattaroli of Lucia Ristorante of Boston and Winchester in association with the John M. Pecora and the Zammuto families. The exhibit can be viewed at The Sports Mu- seum located in the TD Garden. For more information and museum hours, call 617-624-1234.
