I circa 20 Vescovi italiani riuniti recentemente in assemblea generale ad Assisi hanno approvato, dopo alcuni emendamenti, il nuovo rito delle esequie che recepisce, nella normativa ecclesiastica italiana, anche la cremazione, pratica gia' autorizzata dal Diritto Canonico del 1983. Verra' anche introdotto un formulario liturgico per chi scegliera' di essere cremato. A rendere nota la decisione dei Vescovi e' stato il portavoce dell'episcopato italiano, Mons. Domenico Pompili. La Chiesa pur preferendo la sepoltura tradizionale non riprova la cremazione " se non quando e' voluta in disprezzo della fede, cioe' quando si intende , con questo gesto, affermare il nulla in cui verrebbe l'essere umano', ha spegato ilrappresentante della eEl. Nella societa' italiana come altrove, I Vescovi guardano con preoccupazione ad una certa tendenza necrofila, o peggio, a fenomoni di satanismo collegato ai morti. Per questo, in futuro, si promuvera' una riflessione a tutto campo sul senso della vita e della morte, a fronte di una cultura che maschera, o esorcizza, la fine, ha assicurato Mons. Panpili. Si vuole cosi' risvegliare, ha spiegato Mons. Panpili, la memoria dei defunti.attraverso la preghiera, bandendo ogni forma di ricerca del macabro e del demonismo. La memoria dei defunti e la familiarita' con il camposanto sara' un modo concreto per contrastare la prassi di disperdere le ceneri o conservarle al di fuori del cimitero o di una chiesa. Non esiste nella dichiarazione dei Vescovi una spiegazione di come si puo' disporre delle ceneri dei defunti. Questa materia, cosi' delicata, coinvolge le sensibilita' piu' profonde dei cristiani ed i principi basilari della fede, come la resurrezione dei corpi. La CEI (consiglio episcopale italiano} ha molto lavoro da fare, prima di ricevere l'imprimatur definitivo della Congregazione Vaticana per il Culto Divino. II solo suggerimento e' quello che le ceneri dovrebbero essere depositate in luoghi consacrati. In conclusione, diciamo che in tempi antichi la cremazione non era contemplata. Ma ora le nuove eSigenze richiedono nuove alternative. DID YOU KNOW THAT ... The Italian Bishops, who number about 200, recently met in general assembly at Assisi where {they) approved, with a few amendments, the new funeral ritual which contem- plates, in the Italian Ecclesiastic policy-making, precisely cremation, a .practice already authorized by Canon Law in 1983. It will also introduce a liturgical ritual to anyone who will choose to be cremated. To make the Bishops' decision the public was the spokesperson of the Italian Bishops Congregation, Mons Domenico Pompili. The Church, which prefers the traditional burial, doesn't object to cremation, "unless," explains Pompili, "it is requested to disparage the Faith, i.e., when, by doing so, someone intends to affirm the insignificance of the human being." In Italian society, as elsewhere, the Bishops look with pre-occupation to a particular neurologic tendency, or worse, to satanic phenomena performed on the dead. Monsignor Pompfli has assured everyone that in the future, because of that, we shall better reflect entirely on the meaning of life and death, vis-a-vis a culture, which masks or exorcises the end. In this fashion we wish to re-awaken the memory of the dead people, explains Mons. Pompili, through prayer, banning any macabre orientation and demonism. The memory of the departed people and the familiarity with the cemetery will be a concrete way to approve the practice of dispersing the ashes or preserving them outside the cemetery or a Church. In the Bishops' deliberations there is no explanation on ways to dispose of the departed's ashes. Such issue, so delicate, involves the deepest sensibilities of the Christians and the fundamen- tal principles of the Faith, such as the Resurrection of bodies. The CEI (the Italian Bishops Congregation) has a lot to do before getting the final "Imprimatur" of the Vatican Congregation for the Devine Cult. The only suggestion may be that the ashes ought to be preserved in consecrated places. In conclusion, let's mention that in ancient times cremation was never contemplated. Now, however, new needs require new alternatives. Thetime has come, the walrus said, TO TALK OF MANY THINGS of shoes and ships and sealing wax of cabbages and kings by Sal Giarratani SHOULD THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY TAKE OVER IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT DUTIES? Last year sometime, I re- ceived a recall letter from the Ford Motor Company con- cerning a problem with my 1997 Mercury Grand Mar- quis. I put the letter aside and forgot all about it. Re- cently, I got another letter from Ford in the mail saying I really needed to get my car into a Ford shop or else. This letter was as happy as the first one I received. They ac- tually sounded upset by my lackadaisical approach over the recall notice. A few days ago, I was over at Tedeschi's in Charlestown's Thompson Square getting my newspa- pers and the guy parking his car next to mine was driv- ing a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis. He asked if I had just received a second recall notice in the mail and I said I had. He threw that first let- ter away too. He and I joked about the sternest of the sec- ond letter. I joked with him about how the federal government can't seem to keep track of who's crossing our southern borders or just how many ilegals are actually living inside this country but the Ford Motor Company knew that I owned a 1997 Mercury and that other guy next to me owned a 1996 Mercury. If Ford knows how many old Mercurys there are in this country, shouldn't Immigra- tion and Customs Enforce- ment know .how many ille- gal immigrants are here too? MEET AND GREET TIME FOR ITALIA UNITA Italia Unita began in 1995 to celebrate Italian culture and membership is open to individuals who want to keep in touch with their culture. Recently, the organization held its annual mix and mingle event at Jevelli's Restaurant in Day Square, East Boston on January 6 where folks enjoyed a nice time together. A number of members signed up that night as well as many others re-upping for another year. It was a pleasant evening for all as plans were also an- nounced for the ongoing 150 th anniversary celebra- tion of the Unification of Italy. Former Governors Coun- cilor Michael Callahan passed away on January 6 just before his successor and good friend Terrence Kennedy was to be sworn in. Callahan had been strug- gling with melanoma for some time now. He was a 6- term member of the Gover- nors Council in District 6. Last March, he announced he would not run for re-elec- tion and backed' Kennedy for the job. The two men were good friends. The last time I met Callahan we were jok- ing with each other at the Bunker Hill Day Parade. It was there he introduced me to his friend Kennedy. Callahan rode in an open convertible with him that June day. He kept up a good front with everyone but the illness was taking its toll on him.. However, he kept that smile going all the time even in his sometimes painful journey home to God: To know him was a real honest-to-God pleasure. I gladly called him my friend. "AFTERNOON SHOOTING LEAVES MAN DEAD" The above was a newspa- per headline on January 5 reporting a shooting death the previous day. A man who was 20-something became the city's first homicide vic- tim of the new year when he was shot dead in broad day- light at a busy, you guessed it, Dorchester intersection. The victim was rushed to BMC, where he later died. The gunfire erupted at l:20pm at the corner of Blue Hill Avenue and Columbia Road near the entrance to Franklin Park Zoo. Wit- nesses heard five gunshots and saw the victim run into the street before collapsing. One passerby told a reporter, "It happened in broad day- light. They're getting bolder." The countdown on mur- ders for 2010 ends and the new murder count starts. Will2011 be more of the same? If the past is an "indi- cator, the killing will con- tinue until the community rises up and joins together to stop it. The police can help but its the community's responsibility not to make the past its future again. FALLON SEEKS OKAY FOR FAN PIER SITE Joseph Fallon is moving on his proposed 15-story re- search lab at Fan Pier. On January 5, Fallon Co. sought approval from the city's Civic Design Commission for his building site next to the Moakley Federal Court House. He's still looking for tenants. Right now the ten- ant pool is either new com- panies coming into Boston or companies willing to pay big bucks in a newly built wa- terfront building. Any developer needs a site that is signed, permitted and ready to start construction quickly or developers won't be taking any proposals se- riously. Fallon has already built an office tower at One Marina Park Drive. In May, Louis Boston temporarily moved from the Back Bay t Fan Pier. Fan Pier spans nine blocks and 21 acres. WHAT ABOUT THE FOREST HILLS OVERPASS? For years when I lived in Quincy and worked in the Longwood Medical Area, I traveled to work going across the Casey Overpass at For- est Hills. Most folks just call it the Forest Hills Overpass. It has been scary looking for years now. Back on October 10, the overpass closed one lane in each direction to keep the thing upright. They've been trying to patch it up for years but the last Band-Aid has been used. The thing will be coming down and replaced by some- thing else. Some liberals (who else?) would like to see no overpass but that would be a traffic nightmare for surface roads down below it. I can't see that happening no matter how much liber- als like the idea of re-con- necting the Emerald Neck- lace. "Ain't gonna happen" as they say. A new overpass will replace the current one, which is al- most 60 years old. Auto traf- fic will have to suffer going from the Arnold Arboretum to Franklin Park. The new overpass is still in the plan- ning stages and the soonest any new overpass will be ready is late 2013 or perhaps 2014. Soon the signs will go up reading "Seek Alterna- tive Routes" as if there's one. At least the new one won't have to be as" elevated as the present one since there is no more elevated Orange Line structure be- neath it. Route 203 East and West is a major roadway to and from the South Shore. MURPHY UNANIMOUS CHOICE FOR COUNCIL PRESIDENT Kudos to my good friend Stephen Murphy on getting himself elected president of the Boston City Council by a 12-0 vote. Unlike a recent Council vote, this one had no controversy attached to it. Said the most senior City Councilor at Large, "I'm hon- ored to have the opportunity to lead the body." PARKING METERS FEES GOING UPWARD Boston's parking meters in Boston will soon cost an ex- tra quarter. Boston's Trans- portation Commissioner Tom Tinlin said the new rate will be a $1.25 per hour, up from just one buck. And will take effect by the end of January. Tinlin said the new rate was being mulled over for a long time and added while "It's never a good time" to raise the rates, he thought motorists could handle the modest increase. The City of Boston thinks the new hourly rate could add an ex- tra $3 million per fiscal year. The more it costs to drive into the city to shop, the more folks will shop out in the burbs with plenty of free parking. Also, higher hourly parking meter rates could be the death knell to commerce in "Downtown Crossing" which already looks like "Downtown Ghost Town." For every new quarter raised, how many other quarters leave the city? Think about it, motorists will certainly be mulling the new hike in the parking tax.
