GUEST EDITORIAL WHY AREN'T LIBERALS CALLING THIS RE-APPOINTMENT "RETURN TO BAD OLD DAYS?" by Sal Giarratani Remember back in the day 35-40 years ago when lots of liberals were always calling members of the old five member citywide Boston School Committee rac- ist? Remember when Louise Day Hicks and John J. Kerrigan were especially made an example of by them? Now we get someone re-appointed to today's school com- mittee whose untidy rhetoric, to me, sounds far worse than what Hicks or Kerrigan were alleged to have committed back in the day. Read the following care- fully and come to your own conclusion about whether liberals are truly hypocrites most of the time. The news that Mayor Thomas Menino has appointed Meg Campbell to a seat on the appointed Boston School Committee, I found as good news. As the mayor stated, the sc.hool committee "Plays an essential role in,our city, working to make sure all of our children learn and thrive." Campbell founded and is the executive director of the Codman Academy Charter Public School. She is active in her Dorchester neighborhood and really cares about the quality of public education available for the school- age children of Boston. I am however not that happy with the mayor re-ap- pointing Claudio Martinez to another term on the school board. Doesn't Menino remember what Martinez did a year ago when he directed a seemingly racist com- ment to a parent during a heated discussion at a school committee meeting, I believe, in December 2010? I remember that meeting and what was reported on it at the time. During a hearing on a school closing plan, Martinez reportedly told a white parent from the Agassiz School to take a seat because if he wanted to hear from a "white privileged woman" he'd let her know. Martinez may be the Executive Director of the Hyde Square Task Force and he may sit on many other com- munity boards. He may have been recognized for his leadership inside the community but making overt racial remarks is totally unacceptable for membership on the appointed Boston School Committee. Did he ever apologize directly to that parent his rac- ist rant was directed towards? Does he understand how vile his remarks were? Many people say unfortunate things when they get upset but there is no excuse for racist comments from a public official to a citizen at a public hearing. In the old days, liberals often blasted members of the elected Boston School Committee for being racists. Why was the liberal community silent over Martinez's re- marks? Why is the mayor quiet? The mayor has called Martinez a respected leader "Who can help raise our schools to the next level." I don't think we can get to the next level until some particular school board mem- ber understands that we must treat all people as equals without reference to gender, race or ethnic background. Boston Police Investigating Phone Scam Targeting Elderly Residents; Company Called GE Security Systems Going Door-to-door Using Mayor's Name to Promote Free Installation of Home Security System The Boston Police Depart- ment is investigating two consumer scams targeting Boston residents. Several victims have reported to police receiving a phone call from number 702-330-9199 and other similar numbers. Victims are then told by the caller (suspect) that they have won a prize which includes a large amount of money, a new car or property. Victims are then instructed by. the caller to go to a local convenience store and pur- chase a Green Dot Money Pack (reloadable credit card). After the reloadable credit card is purchased, victims are instructed to contact the caller (suspect) and provide the serial number to the prepaid card. Once that occurs, the suspect is given access to the account and the money. Officers would like to take this opportunity to alert potential victims that there is no prize. This is a seam. The Boston Police Depart- ment encourages individu- als who receive phone calls of this nature to call 911 immediately. Victims should never send money or give personal information to an unknown individual and should instead immedi- ately contact police. Mayor Menino's office has also received multiple calls today from residents report- ing that the company GE Security Systems, Versa- tile Marketing Solutions, Inc. of Warwick, RI is visit- ing the homes of Boston resi- dents and saying that Mayor Menino and the city gov- ernment is offering a free installation for a home security system. The com- pany installs their system, and although they do not charge an "installation fee," they collect social security and credit card information and sign up the resident for $49/month service charge for the system's maintenance. The City of Boston and Mayor Menino do NOT have any relation- ship with this company and remind residents that they should not give out their personal information to anyone they do not know who calls or visits their home. Saint Brigid of Ireland by Bennett Molinari and Richard Molinari Saint Brigid, (also called Saint Brigit) known as the second Patron of Ireland, was born in County Louth near Dundalk about the year 451. She was born of a noble family and is said to have been baptized by Saint Patrick. Brigid, from her youth, showed signs of sanctity; she received many offers of marriage but refused them all to become a nun. Saint Brigid is celebrated for her I generosity to the poor. Brigid received the veil from Saint Macaille and was professed by Saint Mel of Ardagh who is believed to have conferred on her abbatial powers, that is, the powers reserved for an abbot or abbess. Brigid, with a small group of nuns, went to Druin Criadh where she founded the first convent in Ireland, her famous Convent of Cill Dara, (the church of the oak) now Kildare, over which she pre- sided for many years. St. Brigid's small oratory at Cill-Dara became a center of religion and learning, and eventually developed into a ca- thedral city. It is reported that she chose St. Conleth "to govern the church along with herself"; thus for centuries, Kildare was headed by a double line of abbot-bishops and abbesses, the Abbess of Kildare being regarded as superior general of the convents in Ireland. It was from the Scriptorium at Kildare that the illuminated Book of Kildare was created, a magnificently illuminated Book of Gospels that disap- peared during the Reformation. Saint Brigid founded two monastic insti- (Continued on Page 13) SUPER BOWL XLVI Trivia Quiz Questions: Test Your Knowledge of These Competing Teams! Patriots score against Jets.
