Back before the birth of Red Sox Nation, baby boomer baseball fans had little to be happy about. During the '50s and '60s the Red Sox stunk most of the time. We had great players, but no real team. In the sixties the highlight of any game was the possibility that Dick Radatz would walk to the mound from the bullpen to save a game for us. He was a 20-game winner for the Sox in 1963. He was a finesse pitcher with changing speeds and great control. The Sox signed him up in 1955 and he came up with the Red Sox in 1958 and soon became the ace of the staff. He won at least 14 games between 1960-63. He pitched a no-hitter against the Chi- cago White Sox winning 1-0 on August 1, 1962. He also threw three one-hitters and struck out 17 in a game against the Washing- ton Senators in 1961. DeCris, Register of Probate Rundat 2/13/15 -- Billy Monbouquette On September 25, 1965 in a game against the old Kan- sas City Athletics, he was the starting pitcher versus 58-year-old Hall of Famer Satchel Paige. He threw a complete game victory and also made history by becom- ing the last strike out vic- tim of the legendary Satchel Paige. After going 96-91 in Bos- ton, he was traded to the Tigers for the 1966 season. From there it was the Yankees and finally the Giants where he finished his career on September 3, 1968. Monbouquette was elected to the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2000 and also ended up a pitching coach for Detroit's Single A team, the Oneonta Tigers. For almost seven years he fought his biggest battle with cancer and in the end. He was a survivor who always fought his way through adversity. He lasted longer than many but now in the end is at peace. He fought the good faith, he finished the race and the game has ended for him. Victor Martinez Having Knee Surgery Tigers' Slugger Victor Martinez had knee surgery earlier this week to repair a tear to the medial meniscus in his left knee. He was injured in the off-season during his workout program for the second time in four years. He missed the entire 2012 season the first time. This time it is a different injury to the same knee.
