An Emory University study found that beer halved the risk of heart failure among seniors. And Boston University scientists discovered light drinkers had fewer strokes than non- drinkers, probably because alcohol thins the blood and prevents clotting in the brain. Strictly for the dogs! Two clever wags have invented a way to make "man's best friend" even better -- dog collars with built-in beer bottle openers! Adam Harris and John Hornbeak both of San Diego, Cali- fornia, had a foaming burst of inspiration during an outing when they couldn't crack a cold one. "We had a whole bucket of beers," says John. "I remember a couple of dogs and no openers and we said: "I think that's a good idea." John explains: "You call your dog over, you grab this thing on the collar, and it retracts out, and you open up the bottle." Adam raves: It basically creates a four- legged bottle-opener for the party animal." Warning! Smoking is bad for your back! Researchers have found a link between smoking and back pain. Smokers are 31 percent more likely to have lower back prob- lems, says a report in the American Journal of Medicine. Experts believe it's because cigarettes increase the risk of osteoporo- sis, reduce blood supply to the spine, and spread pain-conducting chemicals in the blood. And they say quitting cigarettes can ease the pain. It's better to have a backache from work- ing in the garden than a headache from worrying about the rest of the earth. More bad news! A study of folks ages 45 to 55 found that those who did jogging, tennis, or other physical activities several hours a week caused the most damage to their knees. But the threat of osteoarthritis or other joint pain wasn't so bad with low- impact exercises such as swimming or cy- cling, say researchers from the University of California. The best form of exercise just might be- doing nothing at all! According to experts, rest and recovery during a lengthy training program is just as important as the work- out itself. A shocking forecast predicts that the num- ber of people who have diabetes will double in the next 25 years but you don't have to be one of the 44 million who will suffer from the disease. Watching your diet, losing weight and exercising by walking just 30 minutes a day can help you starve off the illness that can cause heart disease, kid- ney disease, vision problems and foot amputation. Huh? The average woman spends 18 years in the kitchen. But the gals aren't chained to the stove for all that time, as just over an hour a day is spent cooking. They actually spend more time tidying up and socializing. And 38 minutes a day is used to just relax there, reading, watching TV and even surf- ing the internet at the kitchen table. "People are spending more of their lives in the kitchen -- it is still the heart of the home," declares home improvement expert Jim Barnard. "Not only do families use it for meal times, the kitchen is also a beehive of ac- tivity when socializing." Bella Culo of Chestnut Hill, says, "Some women will go anywhere for dinner, except to the kitchen." Tom Analetto of Medford, claims in one respect the old-fashioned kitchens were superior to the modern ones-they had old- fashioned housewives in them." Carlo Scostumato claims half the acci- dents happen in the kitchen, and usually the husband has to eat them. The astute Mona Lisa Cappuccio suggests another way to get your wife to spend more time in the kitchen is to put an extension phone there. Women who have a mate pack on more pounds than their single sisters, a new study has found. Gals gained an average of 20 pounds if she had a mate and a baby. While the report only involved women, ear- lier studies have also shown an increase of obesity for men with children. I 0 0 0 Say cheese! A recent scientific study reveals that full-fat cheese is a handy-dandy diet food. Women who ate one ounce of full-fat cheese a day packed on less tab than women who choose to avoid the tasty treat, says the study which was reported recently in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. What next? Eating margarine makes kids dumber! That's the shocking conclusion of a study linking lower IQ scores in kids to margarine. Robyn Waters of Swampscott wonders if eating pizza makes a kid smarter? Her son "the hunk" Kyle who continuously makes the honor roll at school is a dedicated pizza lover. This just in! If your child seems to be a worry wart, it's not unusual -- new research reveals modern kids are dealing with more angst than those who grew up during the Great Depression! Shockingly, five times as many students suffer anxiety today than in 1938. Today kids are stressed out from school and a popular culture increasingly focused on wealth, looks and status, says the study for Clinical Psychology Review. Watching too much television may shorten your life by years. Australian re- searchers tracked the medical conditions of 8,800 healthy adults for several years; the more television the participants watched, the more likely they were to have died dur- ing the years examined. Prolonged watch- ing of television equals a lot of sitting, which invariably means there's an absence of muscle movement. Study author David Dunsan says long, unnatural periods of doing nothing physically clearly lead to pre- mature death. "The more you move, the greater the health benefits are likely to be." Despite the recession, the movie busi- ness is enjoying its most lucrative year ever, with box office revenues hitting a record $9.7 billion, up 8.4 percent over last year. Higher ticket prices account for some of the revenue rise, but attendance is up almost 5 percent from last year. Speaking of television, we are proud to have at one time, been noted for creating many of television's most memorable com- mercials. For the record, along with myself and A1 Sotari, a sales executive of WBZ-TV we convinced Ernie Boch to use television to create a greater awareness of his Ram- bler dealership in Norwood. In fact, Boch traded a Rambler for TV time. Yes, we cre- ated the commercials. Enough said. One more time! Ernie Boch was an Italian- American. The piano was created by an Italian, Bartolomeo Cristofori. The piano was originally called, piano e forte. The man who inspired Jefferson to recruit the Italian musicians was Philip Mazzei, the Italian who helped create the Declaration of Inde- pendence. AMERICA IS A BEAUTIFUL ITALIAN NAME Recipes from the Homeland by Vita Orlando Sinopoli COPYRIGHT, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED SPLIT GREEN PEA SOUP 1 cup split green peas 1 medium onion chopped (optional) 1 quart of water 1 cup small elbow or shell macaroni 2 tablespoons of canola or olive oil Salt Ham pieces, ham hock, or ham bone are excellent addi- tions to this recipe. Wash split peas and place in water in a two-quart pan. Bring water to boil and add chopped onion, ham pieces, ham hock, or ham bone. Cook slowly, partially covered, to prevent overflow of liquids. Check frequently to prevent mixture from sticking or burning. When all split peas have dissolved, add oil and stir. Cover pot, shut burner, and move from burner. Following directions on the pasta package, cook small elbow or small shell macaroni to tenderness desired. Mix pasta with pea soup and serve together with ham pieces or separately. Pea soup can be frozen. Defrost first, before heating for use. Serves two. NOTE: During the Depression, many of my relatives served Pea Soup often, as did my mother. This economical, nutritious, and easy-to-prepare meal was especially welcome on our supper table during the cold winter months. Stop the expansion of gov- ernment and the expansion of federal spending! This would help to create some confi- dence with the public that the policy makers are finally hearing the people. Confi- dence is an economic addi- tive to growth. It is really not any more complicated than that. Stated another way, if gov- ernment gets out of the way and remove tax uncertainty and regulatory uncertainty, a real economic recovery could get underway. The president, his advisors and the Democrats in Con- gress can't seem to get past their Washington beltway bubble, their insatiable quest for power, or their des- perate desire to get re- elected. Even worse, they can't let go of their political agenda to make government bigger and bigger, and tax us to death. The citizen activist move- ment that is growing across this country is no gimmick. It is getting bigger and big- ger, and promises to produce even more election sur- prises in November of 2010 similar to what happened recently in New Jersey and Massachusetts. Maybe then they will get it.
