Page 14 POST-GAZETTE, FEBRUARY 28, 2014 Bil Cc IX) 8APEVATE CHE ... DID YOU KNOW THAT ... If you felt you knew everything about Christopher Columbus -- Cristobal Colon, to the Spanish -- in relation to the discovery of the New World, it's because you have never been to Barcelona, the 'Catalan City' that was the host to the discovery of America in the greatest adventure ever made. The Spanish are telling everyone the most unknown aspects of the sailor's life in order to ascertain his Catalonian origins which would contradict the Genoese's claim and underline the crucial role of Barcelona in the preparation of the navigator's second voyage, deny- ing the official story that described the departure of the caravels from Cadiz rather than from Barcelona. The tourism office in Barcelona offers a tour, of more than two hours, with guides that speak Italian, Spanish and English, to discover the alleged admiral's birth place, as conjectured by some local historians, up to the "Mirador de Colon", the esplanade where a 200ft column has, at its top, the statue of Columbus. The tours are run from July to October, with the sole purpose of unmasking the "system- atic concealment relating to the Catalan Nation and of the Aragonese Crown," as the actual protagonists, as the his- toric Catalan Club tries to divulge the historical thesis by which the set-up of the second expedition took place in Barcelona. However, after more than five centuries there are no original documents to establish, once and for all, who really was Columbus: was he a Catalonian, an Israeli, a Portuguese, or some other national? We believe that the few handwritten documents left by Columbus himself are those original ones of the Genoese! News Briefs (Continued from Page I) Americans were called the future of America and a core constituency of the Obamacrats. Who is the real knuckle- head in this news story? Quote to Note "Under Obama, our allies no longer trust us, our en- emies no longer fear us and neither has respect for us. None of this would happen under any other American President's watch." -- former U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Florida Actress Mary Grace Canfield from "Green Acres Passes Away at 89 Mary Grace Canfield, a character actress on TV during the '60s and '70s has passed away. Her best role was playing "Ralph Monroe," a handywoman on that silly TV sitcom Green Acres. Her career lasted four decades. She used to be on soaps too like General Hos- pital. She also showed up on many other sitcoms over the years. Things were always so, so funny in the town of Hootersville By the way, does anyone know what ever happened to "Arnold the Pig"? He prob- ably became a slice of cold cut years ago, huh? Winston Churchill Seems Right Today, Doesn't He? Former British Prime Min- ister Winston Churchill once reportedly commented that "the best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the aver- age voter." Back in 1964, two years after the Cuban Mis- sile Crisis, only 38 percent of Americans correctly knew that the Soviet Union was not in NATO. Again, in 1965 another poll showed that 42 percent of Americans could not name the three branches of our government. I am sure today ff folks were asked who the vice president was; an alarming number wouldn't know who Joe Biden was. This could probably explain how America not only elected Barack Obama in 2008 but also how he got himself re-elected four years later in 2012. IRS Issues One Sorry #@* Apology The new head of the IRS now vows that targeting con- servative groups will never happen again and a new memo released also shows the agency knew its actions were illegal but proceeded anyway. Seems there's more than a "smidgen" of corrup- tion to be found. President Obama on Fox TV with Bill O'Reilly just before the Super Bowl game fumbled with his remarks. He should have talked to the new IRS boss before going on with O'Reilly. Immigration Rule on Terrorist Supporters Weakened The Obama Administra- tion has apparently eased the rules for would be asy- lum seekers, refuges and others trying to get into the United States even as they may have given "limited" support to terrorists. This was one of the recent executive orders by Obama and now means -- those who supported terrorism in their home country are no longer automatically barred from the United States. This new measure was not done with Congress or the consent of Congress. What else is new? New Ambassador of China The nominee for Ambas- sador to China, a former Democratic U.S. senator, seemed dumbfounded when asked a question during his Senate confirmation hear- ings concerning Chinese policies. China is an aggres- sive superpower playing hardball with South Korea and Japan over disputed ter- ritories and China already holds a majority of all U.S. government debt. When asked about the issues between China, Japan and South Korea, former U.S. Senator Max Baucus, D-Montana stated, "I'm no real expert on China (but) it is my strong belief that Chinese people are just as proud as we Americans are proud." His remarks seemed all Chinese to me. It was a nonsense answer. Border Agent Kills Man Who Threw Rocks at Him If you just read the head- line on this AP story that ran a few weeks back in the Bos- ton Globe, one would think killing someone for this is overkill. However, you need to read the news story and when you do or did, you saw the action was justified. A man was shot and killed by a U.S. Border Patrol officer after throwing rocks at the agent. First, the guy threw small rocks and got whacked in the head. The guy started throwing bigger rocks, one the size of an NBA basket- ball. The agent fired back in self-defense killing the rock thrower. Liberals got all bent out of shape over this action. Some thought rock attacks don't justify lethal force. Have someone throw a basketball-sized rock at you and see how you feel about responding with deadly force. Rocks after all can be lethal weapons. The Police Executive Research Forum, a nonprofit that led a government com- missioned review recom- mended that no federal law enforcement agents be al- lowed to use deadly force against rock throwers. U.S. Customs Border Pro- tection rejected the proposed curbs. Good for them. Stop throwing rocks or expect the end is near. Hoops & Hockey (Continued from Page 16) roll student. She played four years of hockey at BU, closing her career in the Hub during the 2011-2012 season by appearing in 29 games, col- lecting a career high 20 assists and 26 points as a defenseman while being named a second team Hockey East All-Star. It's a proud time for a fine university that has a qual- ity coach who leads a proud program. And today, these four new successful Olympi- ans make the Hub one proud Boston.
