DeCdstofaro, Register of Probele Run date: 3/10/17 by Sal Giarratani games, achieving that feat in 1951 with the St. Louis Browns, who moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles in 1954. He went 20-12 in 1951 while the Browns finished in last place going 52-102. He batted .305, and hit a home run on the final day of that season when he recorded his 20th win. Ned Garver recently passed away in Bryan, Ohio, at age 91. He was runner-up for the AL MVP, losing to Yogi Berra from the pennant-winning NY Yankees, who finished 46 games in front of the lowly Browns. Garver also led the league with 24 complete games and started the 1951 AU-Star game. He was only 5' 10" and 180 pounds, but his sinkers, sliders, and change-ups took advantage of hitters' weaknesses. He pitched 14 seasons, going 129- 157. Satchel Paige, who was a teammate of Garver on the Browns, once said, "Next to me, Ned knew more about baseball than just about any pitcher in the American League." By the way, other than Garver, no pitcher on that horrible 1951 team won more than six games. After leaving the Browns, he spent four seasons pitching in Detroit, and then four seasons in Kansas City, then retired during the 1961 season with the LA Angels. He may not be known by many baseball fans, but his achievement in 1951 was one of the best seasons a pitcher could have in a lifetime of baseball. DeCrbtofam, Regi~ of Probate Run date: 3/10/'2017 ,, ,, ,u i , Breaking N m) Ying-Yang Josh Hamilton is apparently Yang again, as his bid to be on the Opening Day roster was scuttled by yet another surgery on his left knee. He had an arthroscopic procedure to remove torn cartilage on February 27m in Houston. The 2010 AL MVP, who was in camp on a Minor League contract, now faces six weeks of rehab before he can even start running again. He is expected to take three months to fully recover. This latest procedure was the 11m in Hamilton's hurtful career and the third since he last played in the Majors back in 2015. Tim Tebow Watch Interesting Tim Tebow is apparently grooving in spring training, hitting nine home runs in batting practice for the NY Mets in Port St. Lucie, FL. The former NFL quarterback, now 29, signed a Minor League deal last September. Could he be the next Bo Jackson? We shall see, sooner than later. I am rooting for him. Bad Boy, Bad Boy, Whatcha Gonna Do? Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu recently told a Miami federal jury he ate up part of a fake passport while flying to the U.S. to cover up his illegal travel as part of a Cuban ballplayer smuggling operation. The 2014 AL Rookie of the Year testified that he ordered a beer on an Air France flight from Haiti to Miami, and slowly consumed the page containing a false name and his own photo. He said he traveled illegally because he was worded about losing the $68-milUon contract he later signed with the White Sox. Seattle Picks Up De ,.long The Mariners picked up righty Chase De Jong from the Dodgers for a pair of minor leaguers. De Jong is coming off a great season, mostly at Double A, where he went 15-2 with a 2.82 ERA in 26 starts with Tulsa, earning Texas League pitcher of the year honors. looking Forward to Watching Andrew Benintendi in "17 Outfielder Andrew Benintendi, a sweet-swinging, 22-year- old.outfielder, blew through two levels in the Minors last season: in Single A in Salem, where he batted .341, and in Double A with the Portland Sea Dogs, where he" batted .295. No surprise he made it up to Fenway. He's a leffy who is built for Fenway. He might start off platooning with Chris Young in Icff field. Last season, he had 105 at-bats with the Red Sox and batted .295. He is too good to platoon, and I sec him taking over one of the outfield spots fuU-time read soon.
