Page 8 POST-GAZETTE, MARCH 12, 2010 FACE OFF FOR ACE ... "A Great Night" by Bob DeCristoforo First off and most impor- tant the Ace Bailey Chil- dren's Foundation was es- tablished in memory of Garnet "Ace" Bailey, who was killed in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Ace's family has created the foundation to honor his memory and to perpetuate his deep car- ing for children. The Ace Bailey Children's Founda- tion focuses on the well Bob D and Wayne Gretzky being of hospitalized chil- dren through the establishment and improvement of pro- fessional services that reduce the stress of hospitalization for newborns, children and their families. The Floating Hos- pital for Children, part of the Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston, is the primary recipient of our funding. Bringing smiles to children in memory of Ace Bailey. For more information, and even more importantly to make a donation check out the website www.acebailey.org. A week ago Wednesday, I attended the 9 th annual "Face Off for Ace" fundraiser for the Ace Bailey Children Foundation at the Radisson Hotel in Boston. It was an ex- traordinary event and quite a night. Once again the Hockey Family came together to remember one of their own and help a cause close to their friend's heart, and the heart of his family. It was quite evident that hockey people are special people, and together they are family. Seeing the people I saw, hearing the people I heard, and listening to what they said brought back some great, and yes, emotional memories. If I were to start a Hall of Fame here would all be in it, and Ace Barley would be the director. If you told me I would have my picture taken with Olympic Med- alist Michele Kwan, listen Bob D and Miehele Kwaa "live" to the stories of the remarkable Don Cherry, and talk to #99 l'he Great One" Wayne Gretzky, I would have said, "you're crazy." On this night I did, and they were all there in honor of Ace Bailey. I quickly realize why they call Wayne Gretzky "The "Great One" and it had nothing to do with his hockey skills. He took pictures with anyone who asked. He signed autographs for everyone, especially the kids. I asked him how he felt when he lit the Olympic Flame. It was hard to put it into words, but the smile on his face "said" it all. I asked how he felt when Team Canada won the Gold Medal. He was "elated, but sorry for Team USA," which he said immediately after the game, he went down and talked to the USA players which to me was pretty classy. He was the Keynote Speaker. He was Ace Bailey's roommate, and Ace many times called him "my son." He talked about what Ace brought to the Edmonton Oilers ... the importance of what being a team member is, the importance of friendship and team cama- raderie. Ace Bailey's name is on seven Stanley Cups. He said "Ace Bailey was not one of the greatest hockey players, but Hockey's greatest person, some- thing special, and this will be his legacy." The 2010 Ace Bailey Good Guy Award was pre- sented to Johnny "Chief" Bucyk. NESN Kathryn Tappen, and Bernie Corbett, voice of the BU Hockey Terriers, were the Masters of Ceremony, and -Ace Bailey would have en- joyed being there "bring- Bob D and Don Cherry ing smiles to children."
