On Tuesday night, the news that Patriots nation feared most was con- firmed. Cornerback Darrelle Revis is once again a New York Jet, signing a five-year, $70 million dollar contract with $39 million in guarantees. At this time last year, the Patriots were finalizing a contract to bring Cornerback DaiTelle Revis to New England. Flash forward one-year later and they now see the man that transformed the defense bolt for a divi- sional opponent, but with a new piece of hard- ware in the New England trophy case. On Monday, the team refused to exercise the 2015 option on the all-pro'$ contract mak- ing him a free agent and available to suitors across the NFL, namely the New York Jets. Our nemesis to the south had all but publi- cized their interest in Revis; in fact they did that too. Back in December, Jets owner Woody Johnson gushed at the possibility of bringing the cornerback, under contract with the Patriots, back to his team, a clear act of tampering with a player under contract with another organization. The slip occurred at a press conference announcing the firing of Head Coach Rex Ryan and General Manager John Idzik. Johnson was clearly trying to infuse some hope into what is and always will be a circus sideshow, the Jets organiza- tion. The ill spoken remark came as no sur- prise, what was shocking was the lack of action on the part of the NFL, an organiza- tion that prides itself on the promotion of "the integrity of the game." A new contract for Revis was seemingly the Patriots top offseason priority. On February 6 th, Patriots team President Jonathan Kraft spoke with Boston Sports Radio WEEI stat- ing, "Hopefully both sides want to make a deal and we'll be able to get one done," said Kraft on the stations morning show, Dennis & Callahan. "He's (Revis) been everything and more since he's been here, Patriots fans knew what he was like on the field, but didn't know what he was like off it. Having worn green all those years and the blind emotion we all have toward the Jets, you have one perception of the man. And the man is very different from that. He's a great guy and he works hard. There is no over-ego to him and he's a great teammate. He's been a real plea- sure to have him as part of the organization." In the end, Kraft and company failed to secure that Revis never wear green again. McCOURTY SECONDARY ISSUES -- McCourty will be a Patriot next season, and Revis will not. Late last Sunday night, while most of New England was sleeping, the Patriots made sure that another key piece of the team's defen- sive secondary would remain in New England for the foreseeable future when they came to terms with Safety Devin McCourty on a 5- year, $47.5 million dollar deal, with $28.5 million guaranteed. BACK IN THE FOLD For a good portion of last week, it didn't ap- pear he would be back. The team decided not to place the franchise tag on McCourty and reports indicated he would be highly pursued by other teams looking to bolster their secondary with a proven commodity. McCourty's heart was in New England, the only pro team he has ever played for and ex- pressed his enthusiasm in returning via his twitter page. #PatsNation I love and appreciate you for all the amazing support. Let's go win another Super Bowl ...or 5. (D-Mac) @ McCourtyTwins McCourty has been a fan favorite since being drafted by the Patriots in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Originally a cornerback, following a stellar rookie sea- son, McCourty struggled in man-to-man coverage prompting a move to Safety. Since the move, McCourty has been a key contribu- tor on defense and special teams. TAG, YOU'RE IT[ Declining to franchise McCourty, the Pa- triots instead applied the tag to Placekicker Stephen Gostkowski. "Stephen has been extremely )roductive and a vital component to our success since joining our team in 2006.
