He became the third player to get a hit aSter the age of 50 and the second player to appear in the ma- jor leagues in five decades. Sometimes he said he would insult them back in Spanish and warned them, "I can tell you worse things than you said to me with- out you knowing what I said." In 1951, he finished sec- ond to NY Yankees' Gil McDougald for American League Rookie of the Year in his first full season. On May I, 1951 he was traded to the White Sox and became the first black player on the team, hitting a homer in his first game with his new team. He returned to the Indians be- fore the 1958 season and also played for the Cardinals and the Senators and had 1,963 hits, 186 homers, knocked in 1,023 RBIs and had a career .298 average. He was an All-Star nine times, but failed to make it to the Hall of Fame, which to me seems a disgrace. Ted Williams was Number 9 for the Red Sox and Minoso was Number 9 for the White Sox. He always said his last dream was to be inducted into Cooperstown, but it was not to be. He said many times "I want to be in Cooperstown. I want to be there. This is my life's dream." Major League Baseball with his passing needs to rectify that lost dream right now. Get Minnie Minoso into Cooperstown. He deserves to be there. He always did. How can he be outside the Hall of Fame? Minoso stated, "I have baseball in my blood, baseball is all I ever wanted to do." I was a very lucky fan growing up with baseball in the late '50s and '60s with so many legends playing the game, but none seemed to enjoy the game more than Minnie and you saw that joy written all over his face. I feel very lucky to have seen him play at Fenway Park. Let's make his dream come truer Happy Birthday to ... Longtime third baseman for the Boston Red Sox Frank Malzone recently cel- ebrated his 85 th birthday. As a kid I remember all those lean years when the Red Sox were far from Red Sox Nation. They weren't even Red Sox Corner back then. There was season after season of pathetic play, es- pecially after Ted Williams retired. A few bright spots included Malzone, who one year back then led the team in homers with I believe a lowly 14. They weren't up and coming, they were down and out. As an Italian-American, I loved seeing Malzone guard- ing the third base line.
