. , . . . . - . • • . . . • BOSTON POST-GAZETTE, MARCH 21,2014 Page15 by Sal Giarratani Tony C Memories Many fans of this column have told me they loved the piece I did on Tony Conigliaro. Memories of him seem always bittersweet. He could have been one of the greatest home run sluggers in history. He was such a natural. The whole world seemed in front of him and then so was that baseball that struck him changing his life forever. Lost dreams seem so difficult to under- stand. It makes you appre- ciate your life and what you are doing with it. Tony had a brief moment in baseball, too brief, but it was all great minus that long-ago August night. We will never forget the fun he gave us all as baseball fans. When baseball was far more a game and less a business as it is today. Remembering Jim Fregosi About a month ago, base- ball lost Jim Fregosi, 71, an All-Star shortstop for the original L.A. Angels and a great baseball manager too. Back in the day, I knew the name of every Italian- American baseball player. My favorites before Tony C came along were Fregosi, Jim Gentile and, of course, Rocco Dominico Colavio bet- ter known as Rocky. Fregosi, he played 18 sea- sons of baseball and man- aged parts of 15 seasons too. A1 Kalione once called him the best shortstop in base- ball. He was a .265 career hitter with 78 triples and 151 homers. His best season was 1970 when he hit 22 homers and knocked in 82 RBIs for the Angels. Can Hamilton and Pujols Return to Greatness? When the Angels got Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols, the team expected the best of them. Pujols, among the most feared sluggers in base- ball put up great numbers for the Cardinals in 11 seasons with over 400 homers and a .328 average. In his first two years as an Angel, he dropped to .275 with far less homers too. Hamilton who averaged 28 homers and 101 RBIs and batting .305 in five years in Texas, dropped to 21 homers, 79 RBIs with a .250 average in his first season as a bad Angel: These two guys came to the Angels amid great hope and to date, look hopeless. Great Kid's Book Recently, came upon a children's baseball book pub- lished back in 1987 titled Boston Red Sox by James R. Rothaus. This is a great little book giving kids a great his- tory of the Boston Red Sox beginning in 1901 and end- ing with the heartbreaking loss to the New York Mets in 1986. Great story book and good photos too. Great primer for young fans and not that bad for old fans like me too. Cardinals Catch Diaz The St. Louis Cardinals have signed up free agent shortstop Aledmys Diaz to a Major League contract. A number of teams were look- ing at this young prospect. The Cardinals signed up this Cuban prospect for about $15 million for 4 years. Diaz, 23, batted .315 with 12 homers and 11 steals back in 2012 for the Las Naranjas de Villa Clara, a Cuban Major League team. The Cards will start him in Triple A this season and is expected to make it up to the Majors quickly. Dodgers Starting with ... This weekend the Dodgers will be opening the season against the Diamondbacks in Australia and going with Clayton Kershaw and Hyun Jin Ryo on the mound at the Sydney Cricket Grounds. The Beckett Watch Following a pretty good start, Josh Beckett gave up 3 home runs in 3 innings in an 8-5 loss to the lowly Mari- ners. Some say, Beckett is looking more like an an- cient Mariner these days on the mound. Yes, it is just spring training but he is no longer the ace of any pitch- ing staff these days, is he?
