Page 6 POST-GAZETTE, APRIL 2, 2010 Saint John School News by Bennett Molinari and Richard Molinari in Education Program. Ellen Oesterle, St John School Counselor and Claire Cassidy, Jr High teacher, are responsible for the implementation of the pro- gram with the US Coast Guard. The goals of the US Coast Guard Partnership in Education Program are to promote the excellence in education by assisting St. John's School in its educational objectives and provide students with oppor- tunities to achieve aca- demic excellence in many fields of study particularly Saint John School has been serving the North End and sur- rounding communi- ties for 115 years pro- viding a sound educa- tion consistent with Catholic teachings and moral principles. As part of its on-going commitment to the education of its chil- dren Saint John's, under the guidance of Sister Eileen Harvey who has served as principal for the past 25 years, has along with 15 urban Boston Catholic Schools, formed an alliance with Boston Catho- lic Schools Connects. The program is a collabo- rative between the Archdio- cese of Boston Catholic Schools Office, the Catholic Schools Foundation, and Boston College. The purpose of the program is to allevi- ate barriers to learning and promote the academic, so- cial-emotional and physical well being of the students. As part of the Program, Saint John School has partnered with the US Coast Guard and their Partnership 3uona Pasqua 617-325-7300 FUNERAL HOME INC. 814 American Legion Highway, Roslindale, MA in English, History, Sci- ence, Mathematics and Computer Science. It also helps to create student awareness of the Coast Guard's mis- sions and people. Members of the Coast Guard have been participat- ing in mentoring programs and will also interact as professional partners by working with school staff to develop new programs. The second cycle of the US Coast Guard Partnership in Educa- tion program consists of weekly classroom volun- teers and an afterschool mentoring program which began on March 23rd and extends into the end of the school year. As General George Washington stood atop Dorchester Heights, he un- derstood how important that event was for Americans fight- ing for their liberty and independence from foreign rule. The American Revolution began in Boston. The original Boston Tea Party was held on Boston's Waterfront near what is now the Congress Street Bridge. Personal freedom and economic liberty go hand in hand. We were created as a government of, for and by the people. We understood that government was our business. Either we run it or it runs us. Back in 1976, we celebrated our Bicentennial. Here we are 34 years from that great American experi- ence and many of our elected officials seem to have forgot- ten who is in charge. We are the governors of this represen- tative democracy of ours. The people rule, not those we elect. It appears that President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have all forgotten the role of the people in our form of government. Our elected elites have come to decide they know better than us what is good for us. Kudos to former Mayor James Sheets for his most recent letter to the editor clearly point- ing out what is wrong in the Nation's Capital today. It would appear Democrats in Washington want this healthcare over- haul so badly they will do it by hook or by crook. They are trying to smuggle in this control over one-sixth of the Ameri- can economy anyway they can. Instead of heeding the will of the voters who spoke out clearly in recent elections such as Scott Brown's upset over the state's Democratic leaders, Democrats are looking more and more like Old West ban- dits rather than American Minutemen back during our own Revolutionary War. The American people are waking up which is why the Tea Party movement continues to grow leaps and bounds. At our core is a love of freedom and a dislike for demagogues like the self-righteous leadership up on Capitol Hill. We need government to be our voices again. We need gov- ernment to listen to us again. We need government to rep- resent our interests and not theirs. We need government of, for and by the people as it was meant to be. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights does not represent what government gives us, it represents a pact between the people and its leaders. It limits government's rule over us. Everything starts with the people because we are the government, the voices that should count the most. 3uona Pasqua C.A.S.IT.
