DeCristofaro, Register of Probate Run date: 4/8/16 EXTRA Innings by Sal Giarratani My position is clear. A des- ignated hitter in the American League is a vital member of a team, no different than a pitcher or a field position player. When the American League instituted the DH rule in 1972, it was mainly to increase the offen- sive numbers. In the late '60s, pitchers were a dominant force and many games were seen by fans as low-scoring, and boring. Adding another hitter to the lineup replacing pitchers going to bat added energy to the game. The National League liked the old way of playing and thought the DH rule wasn't needed. When it comes to baseball rules, I am more Goose Gossage or Jim Kaat, but I now think both leagues should have DH's. Saying all that, I think when Dave Ortiz retires he should be an automatic pick for the Hail of Fame in Cooperstown in five years when his name gets on the ballot. He has all the right numbers and would be the very first DH elected to the Hall. Here's a trivia question. Who was the very first DH for the Boston Red Sox? He was an out- fielder most of his career. He, like other aging sluggers who ran out of legs but still could hit, added seasons to their careers. Hank Aaron ended up as a DH with the Milwau- kee Brewers, and so did Willie Mays for the NY Mets. Have you guessed who was the first Red Sox DH? Well, it was Orlando Ceped~i, a.k.a, the Baby Bambino. Sandoval Now Sits on Bench Pablo Sandoval is now the highest paid bench player in MLB this season. The Sox have chosen to start Travis Shaw at third base. Red Sox Manager John Farrell says, "For right now to start the season, I feel this is the best for our team to go with this alignment. My fo- cus is on the guys ... not what's attached to them or what their contract states." Sandoval signed a 5-year, $95-million contact prior to the start of the 2015 season. Last season Sandoval hit just .245 with 10 homers and 47 RBIs, and was a big disappointment for his salary and projected expectations. A-Rod Now Waffling on Retirement Alex Rodriquez '" - N6 - :f -aispeai- -:tlSaT: Alex Rodriquez could change his mind on retirement and play beyond 2017. Rodriquez turns 41 in July and is fourth on the all-time home run list with 687. Maybe he is thinking if he wants to best Barry Bonds, he needs another 75 homers and he can't do that without playing in 2018. Still ahead of him is also Babe Ruth with 714, and Hank Aaron with 755.
