ABOUT THIS & THAT with Daniel AI Censo Roman Polanski: The Conondrum of a Sinful Artist As much as I love his work, to this day I have a hard time calling myself a Roman Polanski admirer. Let me make one thing clear, I think Roman Polanski is one of the top five greatest directors currently working. His insight into character, emotions, and the horrors of the darkest corners of the human mind are unique to his signature. And yet, Roman Polanski is the test case for the ability to separate the art from the artist. By now his sin, which has barred him from entering the United States, is well known, so this article will simply go over the main points. Polanski had already led an extraordinary life by the time he was arrested and charged with sexual assault on March 11, 1977. In 1936, when Polanski was only three, his family moved back to Krakow where they were forcefully moved into the city's Jewish ghetto in accord with the Third Reich's purity laws. Both of his parents were captured by Nazi soldiers by the time he was six. His mother was taken to Auschwitz where she was killed soon after arriving, while his father was marched off to Mauthausen, a German camp in Austria. Polanski would not be reunited with his father until after the war, during which time the young Polanski survived by living under an assumed name with a Catholic family. The. post-war years proved vital to the development of Polanski's artistic career. The movies had enthralled him at a very early age, but it wasn't until the late '40s that they became his direction. As Polanski himself explained, =Movies were becoming an absolute obsession with me. I was enthralled by everything connected with the cinema -- not just the movies themselves, but the aura that surrounded them. I loved the luminous rectangle of the screen, the sight of the beam slicing through the darkness from the projection booth, the miraculous synchronization of sound and vision, even the dusty smell of the tip-up seats. More than anything else though, I was fascinated by the actual mechanics of the process." Polanski then attended National Film School in Lodz and was introduced to the movie business, starring in some of the later films of Andrzej Wadja, Poland's leading filmmaker. His first directorial effort, 1962's Knife in the Water, was a critical success even outside of Poland. This international recognition brought him to England where he made three films before his big break in Hollywood with Rosemary's Baby in !968. Since then, Polanski became one of the most respected international artists with titles like Chinatown and The Pianist to his credit. There was much tragedy, to be sure, amidst the applause. In 1969, his second wife, Sharon Tate, to whom Polanski had been married just over a year, was brutally murdered by the Manson family at the couple's home in Los Angeles while Polanski was away in Europe working on a film. The tragedy shook the director in a way that perhaps was irreversible. Nonetheless, his reputation as a filmmaker continued to grow both in Hollywood and abroad and, without the trials and tribulations of his personal life, admiring Roman Polanski as an artist without reservation would be natural. But there is that one incident which won't go away and has made it impossible for anyone to unapologetically champion Polanski's art. In March of 1977, Polanski used the home of Jack Nicholson (while Nicholson was out of town) for a Vogue photo shoot. His subject was a thirteen- year-old aspiring actress named Samantha Galley. Galley's mother worked in television- and allowed the private photo shoot, perhaps in hopes of encouraging her daughter's passion for acting. Unexpectedly, Nicholson's ex-girlfriend Anjelica Huston stopped by the house to retrieve some personal items and, according to her testimony, heard Polanski in one of the rooms announcing he would be coming out soon. Both Polanski and Galley came out and, as Huston recalls, neither seemed perturbed or upset. The three chatted for a while and then the two drove off. After the first topless photo shoot, Galley began to feel uneasy but, nonetheless, agreed to continue. =We did photos with me drinking champagne," she later recalled. 'Troward the end it got a little scary, and I realized he had other intentions and I knew I was not where I should be. I just didn't quite know how to get myself out of there." She did, however, voice her refusal when Polanski asked her to lie across the bed. =I said, "No, no. I don't want to go in there. No, I don't want to do this. NoI' and then I didn't know what else to do," she said. Wee were alone and I didn't know what else would happen if I made a scene. So I was just scared, and after giving some resistance, I figured well, I guess H1 get to come home after this'. Not surprisingly, Polanski's and Galley's .accounts diverge from here. Galley claims that after drugging her, the director forced himself on her. Polanski not only denies drugging the girl, but also that she resisted his advances. Even here, however, Polanski cannot clear himself, as intercourse with anyone under the age of fourteen was statutory rape per California law. However, the discrepancy between the two stories may be part of the reason why Judge Laurence J. Rittenband agreed to a plea bargain in which Polanski would only be tried for unlawful sexual intercourse. Upon his arrest the following day, Polanski faced five charges: rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious acts to a child under the age of fourteen, and giving a minor a controlled substance. Polanski pleaded not guilty, but did consent to the plea bargain in which all charges would be dropped in exchange for the charge of unlawful sexual intercourse. This plea was in part decided on with the hopes of sparing Galley a traumatic trial. It also worked out well enough for Polanski, granting him a stay to finish his current film project and allowing him travel to Europe for further location shooting. The condition was that he report to a state prison for a ninety- day psychiatric evaluation. Upon returning to California, Polanski went to the prison, but was released after only forty-two days after the psychiatrist determined he could be released. In truth, the whole sorry episode was likely to be resolved, for better or worse, as Polanski's attomey expected him to get only probation. Meanwhile, however, a new development would throw this already messy story into an even bigger disaster involving international laws and the divide between the art and the artist. LA Deputy District Attorney David Wells and Judge Rittenband had engaged in an ex parte conversation in which Wells persuaded the judge that Polanski would be a sexual menace if released. This was a violation of ethics as Wells was an attorney for the state of California but not an attorney of record on the specific case, precluding him from engaging in extemal conversations pertinent to the case with the judge. Fearing he would be sentenced and then deported, Polanski fled the United States and has remained in Europe ever since. There he has continued to direct some indisputable masterpieces, such as The Pianist and Venus in Fur. The warrant issued by Judge Rittenband immediately after his departure also continues to be in effect, but Polanski has avoided travelling to countries likely to extradite him. Talk about Polanski's legal status in the United States was revived in 2009, when he was arrested at the Zurich Airport on his way to the Zurich film festival. Authorities in the United States had learned of his pending travels to Switzerland a few days prior to his arrival and arranged for his arrest. However, within a few months of legal battles, the Swiss courts rejected the extradition request and Polanski was released once more. One her part, Gailey has moved on and said that the sensationalism of the case has further hurt (Continued on Page 14) I Recipes fr-- 'm the Homeland by Vita Orlando Sinopoli COPYRIGHT, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Nonna Lucy's Stuffed Cornish Hens 2 Cornish hens cut in half I large beaten egg (4 pieces) 1 egg white slightly beaten 1 cup instant rice 3 tablespoons white wine 1 medium onion chopped 1 can chicken broth 2 celery sticks chopped 3 tablespoons canola or 2 cups cubed (day-old) bread vegetable oil 1/4 cup pignoli (pine nuts) 3 tablespoons butter or 2 tablespoons grated Romano margarine cheese 1 large garlic clove (optional) 1 tablespoon choppedparsley 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon poultry 1/2 cup water seasoning Vegetable oil spray Preheat over to 350F. Cook one cup of instant rice in a saucepan as directed on the package. Cover and set aside. Place oil, and butter or margarine in a skillet to heat. Slowly add chopped onion and celery. Stir and cook until onion is opaque. Add chicken broth and cubed bread. Stir until all bread is thoroughly softened. Remove from burner. Pour contents into a large bowl. Add cooked instant rice, pignoll, grated cheese, parsley, poultry seasoning and salt to taste. Mix thoroughly. Then add wine and stir. Refrigerate. Wash Cornish hen halves and wipe with paper towel Cut garlic clove in half. Rub garlic over skin of Comish hens. Then, rub a little margarine or butter over the skin. Spray roasting pan with vegetable oil. Place Cornish hen halves skin side down in roast- ing pan. Remove stuffing from refrigerator. Add beaten egg and mix thoroughly. Cradle two to three tablespoons of stuffing on top of each Cornish hen half. Beat egg white lightly. With pastry brush, gently brush the egg white over the stuffing. This helps keep the stuffing in place. Cover and bake in preheated oven. Mix lemon juice into water and set aside. After baking forty-five minutes, remove roasting pan from oven. Add lemon juice mixture to pan drippings and baste the Cornish hens. Continue baking and basting for approximately forty-five minutes or until Cornish hens are fork tender and stuffing has browned. NOTE: At times, Mama surprised us with stuffed Cornish hens on New Year's Day as an alternate to roasted chicken or turkey. She often used a variation of her turkey stuffing to stuff them. My children and I continue to prepare this very popular meal.
