DeCristofaro, Register of Probate Run date: 4/24/I 5 Chewing Tobacco a Bad Pastime Baseball has begun again and I am sure that many players -- fewer than in the past -- but still too many are stuffing their mouths with chewing tobacco and looking like chipmunks, spitting all over the place too. It looks pretty ugly and always did. Major League Baseball is banning the product, but the Players Association is a no go on the idea, due appar- ently from player pressure. I read a great piece in the Wall Street Journal by Larry Thornberry in which among other things he said, "I never understood the charm of chewing tobacco, the slob- bering, the expectorating, the unspeakable spit cups." Nowadays, many players and coaches are chewing more and more gum, or like Tito Francona who stuffs his mouth with bird seeds and then starts spitting them out all over the place. All these habits seem disgusting, but chewing tobacco can cause mouth cancer. Last year, Tony Gwynn died at age 53 of throat cancer and Curt Schilling is currently in remission with the same issue. Growing up in the '50s and '60s, I can remember Bill Tuttle and especially Nellie Fox from the White Sox chewing all the time. They both looked like they had a couple of baseballs inside their mouths. Fox actually was a spokes- person for a chewing tobacco company in which he rec- ommended the brand to fans as his favorite stuff. I never quite understood the desire to stuff and spit all the time while playing ball. Must have been a seemingly deadly and nasty habit, hard to give up. Buchholz Doing it Again His first start on Opening Day of 2015 was a gem. Then, it was followed by a horrible second start where he became only the fourth pitcher in Red Sox history to allow at least ten runs with- out pitching into the fourth inning. Also, his first inning was a nightmare giving up seven runs. Farrell tried to put a great spin on his per- formance when he stated, "At times he looked to pitch a little too fine. I know he warmed up sharp." Yeah, right. This has always been Clay's problem. You never know which Clay you are going to get. But quickly you find out and often it isn't the right Clay. NEAA Opening Day A hundred players or more are ready for the North End Athletic Association's Open- ing Day at Langone Field on Saturday. The games all start at 9:00 am and run into the afternoon. There's a bar- b-cue starting around noon time. Let's show the kids we care by showing up and sup- porting the NEAA baseball program and grab a hot dog or two. Happy Birthday Time Happy Birthday greetings go out to Vicente Romo, who just turned 72 years of age. Mets" Mejia Banned 80 Games for Steroids Injured Mets closer Jenrry Mejia was recently sus- pended for 80 games, the fourth player in a period of 16 days banned under the Major League drug program following a positive test for the steroid Stanozolol. Mejia accepts the punishment, but =can honestly say I have no idea how a banned sub- stance ended up in my system." April 27, 2002 On April 27, 2002, Red Sox pitcher Derek Lowe pitched a no-hitter at Fenway Park against Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Remember that old team name? That year, Bos- ton also celebrated the 90 th anniversary of Fenway Park. I always liked Lowe, espe- cially when his sinker ball was on target, then he would look like the great Sandy Koufax.
