DeCristofaro, Register of Probate Run date: 5/25/12 Isn't Joey "A-Rod" Lanza, who posed for this photo two years ago at the Fisher- man's Feast "Exhibit A"? (Photo by Sal Gi.arratani) Boomers, Italians and Red Sox Nation If you are over in the North End and start talking base- ball, you will quickly find a number of boomers who like the Yankees. If you talk to baseball fans who are Ital- ian-Americans, you will find many of them support the Bronx Bombers. The issue of Italian supporters of Yan- kees Nation goes back to the number of great Italian American ball players who called Yankee Stadium home over the years. I think it all started with Joe DiMaggio. As for boomers, in general, I am a boomer. I remember rooting for the Yankees. I can remember following them the whole season long. I knew their line-up, their starting rota- tion, their bullpen and their stats. I would go to Fenway to see New York when they came to town. I also liked the Baltimore Orioles too. In short, I liked winning and the Sox weren't winners back in my boyhood days. In 1961 I was following the Mantle-Marls race to beat Babe Ruth's home run record. I thought it was most fitting that Roger Marls hit his 61 st home run of the sea- son against the Red Sox and Tracy Stallard. Back then, between 1962- 64 my favorite Red Sox player was the greatest closer in baseball history in the name of Dick Radatz. In those three seasons, he won 40 games in relief. He pitched an incredible num- ber of innings per season. He had at least 35 saves a sea- son before they were counted as stats. His ERA was so low and his fastball so fast. The Sox were so bad LEGAL NOTICE NOTICE OF PRIVATE SALE Notice is hereby given by TODISCO TOWING OF 94 CONDOR STREET, EAST BOSTON, MA pursuant to the provisions of Mass G.L. c 255, Section 39A that they will sell the following vehicles by private sale on June 2, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Vehicles are being sold to satisfy their garage keeper's lien for towing, storage and notices of sale: 2003 TOYOTA COROLLA VIN: 2T1BR32E13C014539 1994 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE VIN: 1J4GZ58Y6RC218350 1999 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA VIN: 3VWTE29M1XM051060 2000 NlSSAN MAXIMA VIN: JNICA31A2YT214181 1991 LEXUS LS400 VIN: JT8UF11E9M0091595 1996 HONDA ACCORD VIN: 1HGCD5665TA259335 Run dates: 5/18, 5/25 & 611112 EXTRA Innings by Sal Giarratani and they needed him so much, in three short sea- sons they burnt up his right arm. We actually went to the park to see the Sox get into trouble so that Radatz would take his long slow walk out from the bullpen to the mound. I still kind of like the Yan- kees today. I still also re- member those old powerful Baltimore Orioles. Old hab- its die hard. Because of my. past history as a Red Sox fan, I can often think the worse of them. I do want them to win because I re- member the feeling I had back in 1967's Impossible Dream season. I liked that feeling. Winning always feels better than losing. I expected so little out of those Red Sox teams of my youth. I expect so much more out of today's Red Sox. When the Red Sox fail me, as they did last season and so often thus far this season, I can- not tolerate it for a second. It is time for Bobby Valen- tine to be Bobby Valentine again. The Hot and Cold Red Sox I am penning this on Tuesday, May 15. Jon Lester pitched a great complete game last night and the Sox have won four in a row. Yes, the Mariners are not exactly the NY Yankees but a win is a win and the team is still holding down last place in the AL East standings at 16- 19. Personally, this yo-yo strategy by the Sox only pro- longs the agony of Red Sox Nation. There is something to be said in letting the Sox just sink because it might be the only thing to fix what- ever is wrong and there is something wrong, with this pathetic team this season. I am getting annoyed with this pathetic team this sea- son. I am getting annoyed with Bob Valentine doing his best impression of Terry Francona. I expected fire from him but there has been none. He seems to be kow- towing to management in a style unlike his reputation that preceded him. Biggest expensive pain in the @$$ on this team has to be Josh Beckett and both his poor pitching and seem- ingly horrible em"led atti- tude. They should have un- loaded him over the off-sea- son but didn't. It is clear to see a cancerous tumor sometimes. A Beckett-less team to me would be an improvement. What are your thoughts on this? Do you even care? Hamilton Gets Four of a Kind Josh Hamilton became the 16 th player to hit four home runs in a game when he blasted four two-run homers leading the Texas Rangers. to a 10-3 win over the Balti- more Orioles on May 8. I Hamilton also doubled and his 18 total bases set a single-game AL record and his eight RBIs was his ca- reer best. The last player to hit four home runs in a game against the Orioles was Rocky Colavito in 1959, at old Memorial Stadium. Speaking of Rocco Domenico Colavito, I loved watch'ing him play baseball. He was a great slugger. Back when I was a kid, there were still four players who hit four homers in a single game. There was Gil Hodges in 1950, Joe Adcock in 1954, Rocky Colavito in 1959 and Willie Mays in 1961. They were all still players back when I was growing up. By the way, the oft-troubled Hamilton now leads the AL with 14 homers, 36 RBIs and carries a .406 batting aver- age as of May 8. More Baseball Records to Note New Yankees closer Dave Robertson who has replaced the injured Mariano Rivera struck out Carlos Pena with the bases loaded in the bot- tom of the ninth against the Tampa Bay Rays converting his first major league save as New York won the game 5-3 ... Just remembering the name Rocky Colavito brought to mind the name of another Italian American slugger from the '60s, Jim Gentile, first baseman for the Baltimore Orioles back when they were a power- house. Once, I think in 1962, he hit two grand slams in the same inning. That had to be his best day in baseball. May I0 Baseball On May 10, 1967 Hank Aaron hit an inside-the- park home run. It was the only one of his 755 homers which did not clear a ballpark. On May 10, 1981 Charlie Lea became the first French-born pitcher to throw a no-hitter as the Montreal Expos beat the San Francisco Giants 4-J. On May 10, 1970, Hoyt Wilhelm who was a great relief pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles (a knuckleballer) pitched n his 1,000 th major league game for tL St. Louis Cardinals in a game against the Atlanta Braves. Finally, on May 10, 2008 Greg Maddux who played most of his career for the Atlanta Braves won his 350 game as a member of the San Diego Padres beat- ing the Colorado Rockies 3-2.
