pA GE IO " P0ST-GAZETTE, JUNE 3, 2016 ........ ....... by bob morello reviewing the best" the rest MARTINA McBRIDE - RECKLESS Nash Icon + Big Machine Records Martins McBride is happily "back in the saddle" with her first original album in five years, titled Reckless. The country music powerhouse stepped away from her 2014 album, Everlasting, a collection of covers songs in the genre of R&B and Soul. Martins powers out her trademark vocals on the lead single and title track "Reckless" to set the pace. With ten tracks at her command, she gives her country music fans a solid set of songs in the country pop sound that she describes as "songs about love, life, loss, hope, redemption, gratitude, leaving and coming home." McBride's success continues with, "It Ain't Pretty," asserts "woman power" with "Just Around the Comer," moves to the powerful "Everybody Wants to Be Loved," followed by a taste of the free-spirited "The Real Thing." The second half begins with Romance 101 via "That's the Thing About Love," then the pain of'Low All Mtemoon," followed by the gem "Diamond" with Keith Urban, slows the pace for %Ve~ Pick Up Where We Left Off," and puts the final touches on her first album for Nash Icon, a label devoted to veteran country singers, with the "bare bones" honesty of "You and You Alone." BEAR McCREARY - 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE Sparks & Shadows + Bad Robot + Paramount When it comes to creativ- ity and writing an incredible score, one can frequently find the name Bear McCreary at- tached. Producer J.J. Abrams summed up his thoughts with, "It is tense, emotional music that gives the film scope and heart, augments the surprise and horror. It's an homage to Herrmann, but wholly original at the same time. I'm deeply grateful to Bear for his contribu- tion to this movie." Music from the motion picture includes 14 cuts to show the emotion and meaning of the film, utilizing four different ensembles and a traditional 90-piece orchestra. Sparing little to put together the sound he sought, McCreary explodes with cuts like the mov- ing "Michelle," and the solitude of "The Concrete Cell." The heart-pounding, driving "At the Door" displays the urgency of the time, followed by the pen- sive "Message from Megan." The quiet bells of "A Happy Fam- ily" continues on the second half with the searing sound of "The Bum," and this exciting soundtrack winds down with the haunting "The New Michelle" and the explosive rifle track. CRIMINAL - ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK Lakeshore Criminal is a film scored by Brian Tyler who has com- posed and conducted over 70 soundtracks. His track record is impressive, having earned three Emmy Award nomina- tions. Tyler decided that he should create a primarily analog synth score, explaining, "We wanted this score to reflect two radically contrasting aspects of the film: grittiness and emo- tion. We utilized analog out- board synths to create a raw soundscape that could fulfill the entire range of music from grinding raw electronic score to melancholy heartbreak. The style of the score harkened to classic electronic scores of the past." In addition to writing the original score, Tyler wrote and recorded the main title song, "Drift and Fall Again," performed under his moniker of Madsonik and featuring Lola Marsh. In addition, he included the chaotic "Criminal" as a Madsonik Remix. In his earlier remarks, Tyler stated that he wanted this score to reflect the contrasting aspects of the film, grittiness and emotion -- con- sider this score to be "mission accomplished!" BOB DYLAN - FALLEN ANGELS Columbia The ever-surprising Bob Dylan strikes once again. This time he makes his mark with Fallen Angels, a compilation of a dozen songs from the Great American Songbook. One of the many highlights is his in- terpretation of the songs, and how he saw them as a vocal- ist, arranger, and bandleader. Dylan chose to perform songs from a diverse array of writ- ers, including Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Sammy Cahn, and Carolyn Leigh, which he recorded with his touring band. Opening with "Young at Heart" to set the mood, Dylan's unique vocals roll out "Maybe You~l Be There," and the slick picks of "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," before hitting a home run with "All the Way." The bittersweet "SkylarlC is delivered in a free, spirited mood, followed by the haunting "Nevertheless." Dylan picks up the pace with "All or Nothing at All," the jazzy "On a Little Street in Singapore," and the smooth as silk "It Had to Be You." Finishing the dozen de- lightful tracks is the simplicity of'Melancholy Mood," "That Old Black Magic," and "Come Rain or Come Shine." Dylan never disappoints! KRISTIN KONTROL- X-COMMUNICATE Sub Pop Records X-Communicate is Kristin Kontrol's newest project, and she uses the opportunity to express herself. Originally pen- ning 62 songs, she was able to cut them down to a neat ten, thus her exciting debut album for Sub Pop Records. Opening with the soul-baring "Show Me," trailed by "White Street" describing her New Year's Eve past, along with her new track which was recently premiered on SPIN - "(Don't) Wannabe," plus a pair of dance-pop tracks, one being the title cut, and the other "Skin Shed." Kristin puts the pedal to the metal with "Drive the Night," slowing the pace for "What is Love," pound- ing the floor via "Face 2 Face," and puts the wraps on her effort with "Going Thru the Motions," and her finale "Smoke Rings." Without a doubt, Kristin is in Kontrol, and fans locally will have the chance to catch her live (Friday, June 17th @ Cam- bridge's Middle East). Its evolution over the course of more than 200 years is a fascinating tale of continuously ris- ing demand, financial and logistical challenges, and technological advancements. A new exhibit at the West End Museum recounts the phases of development since the 18th century through graphic panels and artifacts like trolley tickets, stock certificates, conductor buttons, tokens, photos and original articles. From Stagecoach to Subway: The West End Street Railway runs now through September 17th in the Museum's Members Gallery. (Photo courtesy of West End Museum) Ferries provided the bulk of people-moving in early to mid-18th century Boston. Subsequent major growth in the city's population and com- merce brought increased transportation needs. The ferries were supplemented with improved roads, new bridges, and new transportation technology. In 1793, the mile-long West Boston Bridge was built between Boston and Cambridge, making the West End a transit hub. In 1795, a public stagecoach began running across it. The means of mass conveyance that followed included omnibuses, which were horse-drawn vehicles larger than stagecoaches, and horse railroads, or horsecars that ran over tracks. The West End Consolidation Act of 1887 established the West End Street Railway Company, uniting 20 different horse railroad companies under one umbrella. This led to the creation of one of the largest street railway operations in the U.S. at the time. Among the West End Street Railway Company's first -- and most lasting- reforms: painting railcars specific colors to designate their routes. In 1889, the West End Street Railway Company introduced Boston's first electric train railway (or cable car) system, and within six years the city had electrified nearly all its railroads. System inefficiency and public dissatisfaction prompted the creation of the Boston Elevated Railway and, ultimately, the MTA and MBTA.
