Your favorite country music here and now! JOSH GROBAN - STAGES Reprise Records Josh Groban's new album titled "Stages," is a !baker's dozen' collection of songs from the world's greatest musi- cals. These songs, like a fine wine, withstood the hands of time, and with Groban at the helm, steer your memories to sheer pleasurel Opening with "Pure Imagination" from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, trailed by the haunt- ing =What I Did for Love" (A Chorus Line), the pleading "Bring Him Home" (Les Mis6rables), the romantic French language "Le Temps Des Cath6drales" (Notre-Dame de Paris), Kelly Clarkson and Josh duet on "All I Ask of You," (The Phantom of the Opera), the memorable "Try to Remember" (The Fantasticks), marking the mid-point with "Over the Rain- bow" from "The Wizard of Oz." Josh weaves his way through the lush arrangements, continuing with "Children Will Lis- ten/Not While I'm Around" (Into the Woods/Sweeney Todd), the inspiring "You'll Never Walk Alone" (Carousel), the trum- pet strains from Chris Botti puts the shine on "Old Devil Moon" (Finian's Rainbow), the creative "Finishing the Hat" (Sunday in the Park with George), one of the many high- lights on "Stages" is the beautiful duet with Audra McDonald on "If I Loved You" (Carousel), and the finale is in the form of "Anthem" from Chess. Groban is awesome! THE MUSIC OF NASHVILLE: SEASON 3, VOL. 2 Big Machine Records "Nashville's" finale reached a fever pitch on television, and so has the original soundtrack album. The talents of performers and cast members excel on this 20-track al- bum. It's non-stop stories with "Borrow My Heart" and the energetic "My Song" (Scarlett/Avery/Gunnar), "I'm On It" (Will), the pretty "Longer" (Scarlett/Gunnar), the solid "This is Real Life" (Rayna/Maddie/Daphne), the rocking "My Heart Don't When to Stop" (Layla), the emotional "The Riv- ers Between Us" (Rayna/Deacon) and the decibels are low- ered with "Sad Song" (Sadie). That's just the half of it as more tales are told, "If I Drink This Beer" (Luke), the ten- der "Hold You in My Arms" and add up the numbers "One By One" (Avery/Juliette), the raging "MississippL Flood" (Juliette), the searing "Heart on Fire" (Maddie/Daphne), the pensive "Have a Little Faith in Me" (Luke/Daphne), and the final shot is "Novocaine" (Sadie/Avery)! POLTERGEIST - MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK Sony Classical Remakes of the 1982-horror film "Poltergeist" offered Ger- man film score composer Marc Streitenfeld the opportu- nity to score the classic. Utilizing his versatile composing talents once again, Streitenfeld was able to distinctly cap- ture the film's eerie mood with his music. He manages to build the haunting tension with a unique blend of sound patterns mixed into a bizarre structure. Streitenfeld's 20 tracks include, "Poltergeist Opening," the trademark "They're Here," "The Storm is Coming," "Into the Closet," "Maddy is off TV," and "You Have to Get My Sister Back." The horror sequences continue to build dramatically with Streitenfeld compositions as, "A Poltergeist Intrusion," "Somebody is with Her," "I Feel a Little Braver," "The Other Side," "Let Her Go," and "Home Free." EFFIE GRAY - MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK Lakeshore Records The movie "Effie Gray" tells the true story of the mar- riage of Gray and renowned art critic John Ruskin. The film's soundtrack features the original score composed by Paul Cantelon. His track record of scoring films for a de- cade has proven his capabilities, and his work on "Effie Gray" furthers his credit for creating an emotional rollercoaster of music. Cantelon's moving score rises and. falls on "Wedding Night," the seriousness of "Effie's Illness," painting, a musical portrait for "Venice," the smooth ride of "Gondola," and the breathtaking "The White Dress." It seems Cantelon is experiencing the emotions personally, with "The Dream," "The Romance," hitting the bottom via "An- nulment," and it all comes to an end with the simplicity of "Effie," "and the dark "End Credits!" It will start at 7:00 pm. A fireworks display follows the parade. Come and join in to honor Old Glory. OLIVER HAZARD PERRY CARNIVAL A SUCCESS The Carnival at the Oliver. Hazard Perry School recently was a great success. The sun was out and the weather great. The school yard was loaded with kids playing and having lots of fun. It was all for a good cause, the school's activities. B.U. MISSES POINT There was a great letter to the editor in the Boston Her- ald last week by Kurt Maguire of Dorchester. As he notes, B.U. recently "added to its faculty a racist, Saida Grundy, who had cyber-bullied a woman in- volved with her ex." The African American Studies Department has come out strong in support of Grundy as have many fac- ulty members who say they are troubled by the "vile mes- sages" left for them to hear. The Ivory Tower folks are calling Grundy's opponents the real racists rather than dealing with the new professor's own racial rants. What does it take to get fired at Boston University? His- torical Commission and the Beacon Hill Commission. The rectory is a four-story brick Greek revival row that was built in 1943. SHOULD FLASH-BANG GET SOLITARY CONFINEMENT INSTEAD? Well, let's see, once the jury decided that the infa- mous Boston Bomber should receive the death penalty, liberals started whining that solitary confinement would be much more humane. Taking the life of a murderer is also murder. However, not all liberals are on the same page. Let's see, execution is cruel and. unusual punish- ment and now solitary con- finement is too? Perhaps house confinement might be nicer, but wouldn't some- one get tired of the same old place all the time 24/7? Flash-Bang won't be re- entering society. A jury found what he did so hei- nous that only execution will do. Life in prison for 60 or so years is actually a delayed execution, because the only way out is in a box. Liberals seem to think ev- eryone can get better and that there's no such thing as a bad boy. Some people are so vile, solitary confinement is appropriate. WILKERSON ANGLING A WAY BACK INTO COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP ROLE Former disgraced State Senator Diane Wilkerson apparently will not go quietly .in the night. She wants back in the political spotlight. She's been speaking out again on the ills of Boston's communities of color. Re- portedly, she was also trying to get a job with Boston 2024. Now she is concerned about building "an economic base in my community." Time may have passed her by in the last few years and there are many new faces and voices out there speak- ing up for her community. People can change and learn from their mistakes, but I think it would be unwise for her to become political again. Her time has passed and she needs to accept that reality.
