BOSTO N POSTG AZ ETTE.COM Baseball Ups and Downs Once again, I'm not talk- ing about "Ups 'n Downs" at Neponset Circle Dorchester, I'm talking baseball records. On May 25, NY Yankees Mariano Rivera became the first baseball pitcher to ap- pear in 1,000 games for the same team ... Meanwhile, on the same night, Toronto Blue Jays iefty matched a major league record by making 28 starts in a row winless. He has walked off the mound a winner since dune 13, 2008. Did Ya Know? It was nine years ago on May 22 since a baseball player hit four home runs in one game. This is a feat that has happened only 4 times in baseball history. LA Dodg- ers did it nine years ago against the Milwaukee Brewers when he went six for six, scoring Six times and setting major league record with 19 total bases. Back when I was a kid, I remem- ber it happening twice, Joe Adcock in the NL and my fa- vorite player Rocky Colavito in the AL. Baseball Exhibit Worth Taking In Down Route I in North Attleboro the North Attlebor- ough Historical Society, thanks to historian Bob Ellis, has put together an exhibit on Mark "The Bird' Fidrych. I've heard it's a great take for baseball fans. Wakefield Wins 194 th Big League Game On Sunday, May 22 with two starters on the D. L. list, the Red Sox pressed Tim Wakefield into emergency starter duty and he came through in flying colors. He stopped the Chicago Cubbies giving up four hits, one run and struck out three in 6-2/3 innings and threw only 75 pitches. It was win number 194 for him. At age 44, he became the oldest Red Sox pitcher to win" a game. Wakefield has survived 19 seasons most of them with the Red Sox after get- ting traded here in 1995 from the Pirates. In that sea- son, he was an impressive surprise going 14-1 as a May call-up. In recent sea- sons he has gone back and forth from spot starter and middle relief but his May 22 start shows why the Red Sox hold on to him. In 2009, he went 11-3 and made the All Star team. Last year was an off year but now he's back keepiflg the Red Sox in the race for first in the AL East. Every time he wins now, he becomes the newest oldest pitcher to win a game. He's a handful of wins behind Roger Clemens and Cy Young. He has become a legend in Red Sox Nation.
