Topps was tops. But there were other card companies too like Fleer. My brother and I were avid baseball card collectors and we kept ours in several shoe boxes or cigar boxes. Back in 1962, I could probably name the starting lineups of every baseball team and had favor- ite players on each team. By the way, not to make people feel sick about the cost of baseball seats at Fenway today, back then the bleachers were 75 cents, then 90 cents and when the price jumped to a $1.25, we were calling it highway robbery. However, getting back to baseball cards: in the sum- mer of '62, Post Cereals got real smart. They started putting baseball cards on the backs of their boxes of cereal. Up to 1961, I loved Cheerios and Corn Flakes but neither General Mills nor Kellogg's had baseball cards. All of a sudden, my brother and I started scooping up Sugar Pops and Sugar Smacks like candy just to tear up the ce- real boxes. Then, we could buy more and get more base- ball cards. As far as eating this stuff like candy, with all the sugar content, it probably should have been called candy. Bad thing, those cereal box baseball cards didn't last long but at least for one summer they provided lots of fun for kids going shopping with their parents. My brother would roam the cereal aisle and find Post Cereal boxes looking for the best players on the back. Rusty Record Still Holds Today Back in 1983, Rusty Staub a great aging slugger at that time was a great pinch hitter for the NY Mets. That season he knocked in 25 pinch hit RBIs, a record that still stands. Fifty Years Ago June 4 Legendary Sandy Koufax pitched a no-hitter, striking out 12, as the Dodgers beat the Phillies, 3-0 on that long ago June night. Remembering Don Zimmer Baseball will never forget Don Zimmer, player, man- ager and coach. He was 83 years old when he passed and had spent 66 years of that life in baseball. He should be in Cooperstown and hopefully will get there soon.
