Page 6 POST-GAZETTE, JUNE 19, 201 5 Chartres Cathedral by Bennett Molinari and Richard Molinari Chartres Cathedral, also known as Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres, is considered one of the most beautiful of the Catholic Church. The ca- thedral bears the name of the town it is located in, which is about 50 miles southwest of Paris, and isthe last of at least five which have occupied the site since Chartres be- came a bishopric in the 4 th century. It is consid- ered one of the finest ex- amples of French Gothic architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Chartres Cathedral has housed what is believed to be, the tunic of the Blessed Virgin Mary, said to have been worn by Mary at the birth of Jesus, the Sancta Camisia. The relic was given to Charlemagne as a gift by the Byzantine Empress Irene of Constantinople during a trip to Jerusalem. It was given tby his grandson, Charles the ald, to the Cathedral in i876. Because of this relic, ,Chartres has been a very Hmportant Marian pilgrim- age destination. The previous cathedral that stood on this site sur- vived a fire in 1134 that de- stroyed much of the town, but on the night of June 10, 1194, lightning ignited a great fire that destroyed all but the west towers, the facade and the crypt of the great Cathedral. It was be- lieved that the Sancta Camisia had been destroyed Boston Harborside Home Joseph A. Langone 580 Commercial St. - Boston, MA 02109 617-536-4110 www.bostonharborsidehome.com Augustave M. The bishop proclaimed this was a sign from Mary that another, even more glorious cathedral should be built in Chartres. Do- nations came in from all over France and rebuild- ing began almost imme- diately in 1194. The people of Chartres volun- teered to haul the neces- sary stone from quarries five miles away. A glori- ous new cathedral with a massive crypt was built under the direction of Bishop Fulbert and later Geoffroy de Ives. The cathedral is in an exceptional state of pres- ervation. The majority of the original medieval stained glass windows have survived intact, while the architecture has seen only minor changes since the early 13 th century. The building's exterior is domi- nated by heavy flying but- tresses, which allowed the architects to increase the window size significantly, while the west end is domi- nated by two contrasting spires - a 349 ft. plain pyra- mid completed around 1160 and a 377 ft. early 16a-cen - tury flamboyant spire on top of an older tower. Equally no- table are the three great faqades, each adorned with hundreds of sculpted figures illustrating key theological themes and narratives. Chartres to this day con- tinues to attract large num- bers of Christian pilgrims, as well as large numbers of secular tourists who come to admire the cathedral's ar- chitecture and historical merit. Brush Your Way To Beauty/ ClaD bella, Make-up brushes have always played an important part in my beauty routine. I've gone through several sets in my lifetime. From hand painted to hand carved, to natural bristles, to artifi- cial bristles, I've enjoyed them all! Right now I have two sets on my vanity and travel sets in every bureau. The ones on my vanity have a clear acrylic handle with gold specs that are quite glam. The other set are just plain wooden handles with a good tight brush. The brushes are all differ- ent depending on the cos- metic you are applying. The newest brush for me out of my collection is the Kabuki with a short handle. It's truly great for highlighting cheekbones, applying min- eral powder, and contouring in general. Using the appropriate brush with your mirror to apply your cosmetic product blends better in the skin tone achieving professional results! A Foundation Brush as well as The Face Sponge also helps to blend founda- tion into skin with velvet like results. A Powder Brush is soft, full and rounded with fluffy bristles. Use this brush over foundation to seal in cosmetic. A Con- PRAYER TO ST. JUDE May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and pre- served throughout the world now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, help of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer 9 times a day and by the 8th day your prayers will be answered. It has never, been known to fail. Publication must be promised. My prayers have been answered. R.A.G.
