Climb aboard Spitfire and hear 14 tracks of Rimes' intimate conversations with whoever is listening. Her eleventh studio album explodes with the energy of the title cut "Spitfire," trailed by the tender "What Have I Done," the sizzle of "Gasoline and Matches," the guilt of "Borrowed," the angry words of "You Ain't Right" and the wake-up-call of "I Do Now." LeAnn covers Missy Higgins' "Where I Stood," the confusion of "You've Ruined Me," the confident feeling related with "Bottle," the emptiness of "A Waste Is A Terrible Thing To Mind" and the bonding of "Just A Girl Like You." LeAnn winds down with the revenge of "God Takes Care of Your Kind," the comforting "Who We Really Are" and a 'live' version of "Borrowed." 30+ million units sold, two Grammys and a host of other awards, Rimes is a superstar, no doubt! Physical copies of 'Spitfire' only available at WalmartI THE HEAT w MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK Lakeshore Records Get your party started with this original motion picture soundtrack for The Heat. The film features Sandra Bullock as FBI Special Agent and Melissa McCarthy as a foul- mouthed Boston cop. The music enhances the story line beautifully, with non-stop rhythms as "Fight The Power" (Isley Brothers), the driving "Stranglehold" (Ted Nugent), the memorable "More Than A Feeling" from local artists Boston, plus dance club gems "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" (LCD Soundsystem), the funky Parliament track "Flashlight" and Santigold's new song "Rock This." There's no letup as Dee-Lite shakes it up via "Groove Is In The Heart," the emo- tional Luther Vandross beauty "Dance With My Father," Air Supply's hit "Every Woman In the World," moving on to "Lonely Town, Lonely Street" (Bill Withers), as April Wine gets better with age and "Roller" and Kimbra steps up to put the hip-hop rap into the finale "Come Into My Head." Excellent track! MONSTERS UNIVERSITY i MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK Disney-Pixar Records Randy Newman, composer/songwriter, creates a super score for Monsters University, worthy of a Ph.d. Using 19 tracks, Newman adds elements that score high, grades, utilizing a!~ international drum corps to solidify the collegiate feel, a con- cert band and even a bit of Brahms. All recorded with a 112- piece orchestra, with extracurricular add-ons that include an accordion tune for the Oozma Kappy fraternity, a laid- back shuffle to introduce Sulley and for the aspiring Scare student Mike Wazowski, a variable clarinet surrounds him. Newman is a master in scoring films and he's working with Disney-Pixar for the seventh time. One of the many high- light sounds has musicians Axwell & Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia performing the song "Roar" which cre- ates a fun, freewheeling college atmosphere. Not hard to see or hear how Randy Newman was a 20-time Oscar nomi- neeI Diploma please! BAREFOOT DIVAS .--- WALK A MILE 1N MY SHOES VGM-MGM Billed as -- 'Soul Sisters of the South Pacific: The Six-Part Harmonies, Outspoken Songs and Indigenous Worlds of Bare- foot Divas' -- this is a collection of six women with six dis- tinct life stories. Featured is Ursula Yovich (Aborigine Burarra/Serbia) and Emma Donovan (Aborigine Gumbaynggirr NSW) joined by Whirimako Black and Maisey Rika (Maori), with Merenia (Maori/Romany-Gypsy), and Ngaiire (Papua New Guinea). The Divas' songs are original compositions sung in Aboriginal languages, along with a fusion of English and Maori. The ensemble's tight six-part harmonies and soaring voices shine on cuts as Rika's "TeMatapiko," the pretty "Reconnect," the tender "Children Of Romania" and the upbeat "Repeat Offender." Ngaiire serves up a pair of gems via "Never Forget" and "Two Minds," fol- lowed by Merenia's rhythmic set of "Fortuna" and "This One Be KiUa." Donovan uses her chance to pour out "Lullaby" and the R&B flavored "Ngarraanga." Black uses her power- fully smooth vocals on "Within These Walls" and "Wahine Whakairo" and the final set features Yovich beauties "With- out You" and the questioning "Do I Belong." Superb! THE BEST OF MERRY CLAYTON Ode-Legacy Merry Clayton had been a renowned backup singer for a decade, when her vocal collaboration with Mick Jagger on "Gimme Shelter," catapulted her into a solo career. This compilation has Clayton's five Billboard Hot 100-chart singles on Ode Records, chronicling her career. They include "Coun- try Road," "After All This Time," "Gimme Shelter," "Oh No, Not My Baby" and "Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow" from the TV series 'Baretta.' The version of "The Might Quinn" is by the Brothers and Sisters featuring Clayton, the track "The Acid Queen" is a highlight with Merry working with the Lon- don Symphony Orchestra and London Chamber Choir. An- other of the many highlights has Clayton performing the Black National Hymn I "Lift Ev'ry Voice And Sing." Check out Merry's cover of Neil Young's "Southern Man," as she makes it and the 16 other songs on this collection -- her own! Merry Clayton was the ultimate backup singer, one who made those she sang with, sound even better! The time has come, the walrus said, TO TALK OF MANY THINGS of shoes and ships and sealing wax of cabbages and kings by Sal Giarratani HOLLYWOOD IS COMING BACK TO EASTIE They will be filming a new movie this summer once again on location in East Boston. Columbia Pictures will be here shooting scenes for a movie starring Denzel Washington. The movie is called 'The Equalizer" and is based on a 1980s TV series with Washington playing the title role originally played by British actor Edward Wood- ward. It was a great TV show if you don't remember it, but I do and I loved it. Obviously, Washington won't be a Brit- ish guy this time around. He doesn't have the right ac- cent. Ha, ha. CORRIB CLASSIC 5K RAN BY THE THOUSANDS On Sunday, June 12th nearly 3,000 runners came to Billings Field on Lagrange Street over in West Roxbury for the 20th annual Corrib Classic 5K hosted by the Corrib Pub & Restaurant. This race started back in 1994 with 240 runners. Over the years more and more have run for a great cause. Since 1994 over $4,938 have been donated to Park- way youth leagues and other charities. At the 20th anni- versary, the Corrib Chari- ties Trust Board of Directors have reached their goal reaching the $I million mark. This year among the thou- sands in this race was my nephew George Moses and my two little great nephews C.J and Drew who rode in their carriage together with their daddy. It was a very hot Sunday afternoon if you forgot already but high temps don't hamper a great cause. SUNDAY BRUNCH BUFFETS Seems the hottest place to get a Sunday brunch accord- ing to a lot of my friends is over on Revere Beach at Antonia's at the Beach. I love buffets where I get to pick and choose. I'll have to give this place a try real soon. NOAH'S 25th ANNIVERSAY CELEBRATION Everyone had a great time at the Hyatt Harborside in East Boston on June 20~ to celebrate the 25th anniver- sary of NOAH and to honor this group for all that it has done to bring affordable housing to people. I like ev- eryone else knows the posi- tive impact NOAH has had on the quality of life in and around East Boston and ap- preciate the years of hard work by all involved and es- pecially Phil Giffee for his great leadership. This year's keynote speaker was John Jacobs, co-founder of "Life is good."
