POST-GAZETTE, JULY 1,2011 J00fanna 00Babb00onno ii JulY 4 is just a couple of days away. To most, this means a picnic of some type and fireworks. For Boston- ians, it also includes the Boston Pops Esplanade Con- cert, a tradition started by Arthur Fiedler, continued by John Williams and kept alive by Keith Lockhart. Back in the day, I remember Uncles Paul, Nick and Dad playing for some event on the 4 th. As a child, Morn and I attended concerts that Dad played at, that included loca- tions like the band stands at Revere Beach, Nantasket Beach, Houghton's Pond, Wood Island Park, Salem Willows and Boston Common. I wonder if events like this still happen. As I pass through small Massachu- setts towns, today, I still see band stands in the centers of many of them, and wonder if they are relics of the past or whether they are still used to present free music to the public. The Musicians' Union used to have a fund that paid the musicians for the music which was free to the pub- lic and just for the ask- ing. Back in the day, every time a record was played on radio, a few cents went into a fund, called the Radio arid Transcription Fund, or R and T fund, for short. It later became the Music Per- former's Trust Fund, or MPTF. Today, it still exists, but is a shell of its former self. When the money was never ending, most of the bands were Sousa-style concert bands, large brass ensembles that played a bit of classical, lots of marches and a few popular selections. Years later, when they evolved into dance or swing type bands, I played either bass or bass guitar for the leaders that included Bill Harding, Bernie King, Tony Bruno, Jr., Johnny Shea and Baron Hugo. I even had my own Dixieland combo and played at Shea's Beach in East Bos- ton a few times. (It's Consti- tution Beach for those of you who pass the sign on Bennington Street in Orient Heights, but didn't grow up in East Boston) When I was a child, Dad was hooked up with a conduc- tor who specialized in this type of music. His name was Max Cruley and Dad was the tuba player. Back then, Dad owned both a tuba and a Sou- saphone. He had marched in many a parade carrying these instruments, but he preferred the bandstand type concerts. They were easier on the back muscles. My favorite locations were the indoor bandstand at Nan- tasket Beach or the outdoor gazebo at Revere Beach. When the band was booked to play concerts at these locations, Dad would bring Nanna, Babbononno, Mom and me along. At times, a lunch would be packed ahead of time for the family to enjoy. I always wished that Morn would forget the food, because both beaches, Nan- by John Christoforo A Nostalgic Remembrance IH I tasket and Revere, had hot dog stands, pizza places, lots of cotton candy vendors, pop corn machines with hot- salted pop corn, and soft- serve ice cream shops that sold something called "frozen custard." The kick-off con- cert was always on the Fourth of July. Days before the first con- cert, Dad would take his Sou- saphone out of a hall closet and begin to shine it up. See- ing it was made of silver, it would have tarnished over the winter and he wanted it to be perfect. When I was old enough, he would pay me to shine the instrument. His only task was to make sure the valves were well-oiled and the mouth pieces were clean enough to blow through. If one of Max Cruley's concerts was to begin at noon on the 4 th, Max, with baton in hand, would face the orchestra and give the downbeat just as the clock struck twelve. All of the musicians, Max included would be dressed in band uniforms that included navy blue jackets and mili- tary hats. When the baton signaled the down beat, all of the musicians would stand and begin to play the Star Spangled Banner. The audiences would stand at attention until the National Anthem was over, applaud and then sit to listen to the rest of the concert. I got to know most of the musicians as_ a child. Many of them were old timers that Babbononno knew and he would greet them with hand- shakes and hugs during intermission. Babbononno would also have to acknowl- edge his sons, because more often than not, Uncles Paul and Nick were in the front line of musicians playing their clarinets. One of my favorite spots was the band- stand at Wood Island Park. This was a recreation cen- ter in the Day Square area of East Boston accessed by Neptune Road. Back in the 1960s, it became part of Logan Airport. But, by then, it had deteriorated. The only part-of it that was used was the parking lot which became a lover's lane at night ... but, that's another story. When the band played at the Wood Island band- stand, I was just a young kid, but knew most of the other young kids who accompanied their parents there, and we played an assortment of games while the musicians played away. Years later, I was asked if I could put together a Dixie- land band to play on the 4 th of July in back of the original bath house at Shea's Beach (Constitution Beach in East Boston). I assembled a group of musicians that I knew could play Dixieland music better than most. Among them was a tuba player I called, "Dad." They adver- tised the event in the East Boston Times and the Free Press, the two East Boston newspapers back then. The i HHIm names they listed were mine, Dad's, Uncle Paul's and a couple of other East Bos- tonians that I included in the band. My ensemble included banjo, tuba, drums, clarinet, trombone, and two trumpets. I brought my bass violin along, but I was there, basically, to conduct. Evidently, many East Boston- ians who remembered the name, decided to come to the beach on that Fourth of July. As we began to set up, we were greeted by throngs of well wishers who remembered us from the old neighborhood. Some were from Dad's gen- eration and knew him and Uncle Nick. Others were my age. People I had grown up with who brought their young families with them to enjoy the day. While preparing for the event, I decided to do some- thing unorthodox. I used the melody of the song, "Southie Is My Hometown," and re- wrote the title and words. Considering where I was, when I announced the song, it was called, "Eastie Is My Hometown." Throughout my career as a musician, I prided myself as being a good musician and a bad, a very bad singer. When I sang the substitute words, regardless of my lack of vocal qualities, they beach goers applauded and screamed as if I was a local hero, come home. We played dozens of Dixieland favorites. I had assembled some of the best musicians I could dig up to be part of that band, and by the time intermission rolled around, they had proven themselves. One thing was missing. Dad whispered in my ear and I included his suggestion during part two of the concert ... Good old fash- ioned Italian music. I even sang "Oh Marie" in Italian. Those days are gone, but I would like to close wishing everyone a Happy and Safe 4 TM of July, and MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA. This Prequalification Committee will be conducting a qualifications-based evaluation of submittals received from interested trade contractors in order to identify prequalified trade contractors who will be invited to respond to a written Invitation to Bidders. Please note that the Authority is not utilizing this process to prequalify subcontractors who are not trade contractors which shall be done separately in accordance with MGL C149A, Section 8, subsection (j). Qualification Statements shall be evaluated in accordance with the following criteria; (1) Management Experience; (2) Project References including a Public Project Record and (3) Capacity to Complete including a demonstration that the contractor has the financial stability and long-term viability to successfully implement the Project.
