The Friends of the North End Branch Library Sponsor Children's Chess Tournament On Tuesday, May 24 the Friends of the North End Branch Library sponsored a Chess Tournament for Children. It was held at the North End Branch, 25 Parmenter Street, Boston. This event was the final program in a series of regular chess workshops which started in the fall and went through the spring. These were funded by the Friends of the North End Branch Library. The chess workshops met twice a month. The mentors were Jannelle Richardson and Matthew Webber. The Friends intend to refund this very popular series beginning this fall. On hand for the Chess Tournament was Matthew Webber. The children who participated in the tournament were: Maggie and Vinnie O'Byrne, Liam and Ryan Flynn and Audrey and Bea Holzbach. Bea Holzbach won first prize which was a magnet chess set. Vinne O'Byrne came in second and he won the book, "Checkmate! My First Chess Book' by Garry Kasparov and Maggie O'Byrne won third prize. Her prize was a book called, "Chess for Children" by Murray Chandler and Helen Milligan. All children who participated in the tournament will receive chess-themed rubber bracelets.
