O AI3CO10 t5 SkIAt~ T(I~R/PAPERS. ~ ~ JEFFKO THE ITALIAN-AMERI OIBNASSACHUSETTS (Formerly LA GAZZETTA del MASSACHUSETTS) VOL. 121 - NO. 28 BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, JULY 14, 2017 $.35 A COPY From the 18th to the 22nd of July, the Italian Navy Training Ship Amerigo Vespucci will be in Boston, the seventh port of call of the Training Campaign 2017 for the Italian Navy. The Training Campaign on board the Amerigo Vespucci Chicago Still Dodge City Over the long July 4~ holiday weekend, a total of 102 folks were shot in Chicago leaving 14 dead. Police counted 71 shootings and 14 murders between 6:00 pm on Friday and early Wednesday. One hundred victims were shot in that time frame. No wonder President Trump sent in the Feds to help the belea- guered city. Happy Bastille Day July 14 Happy Bastille Day to all French-Americans reading this paper right now. I only started celebrating this holiday two years ago after DNA testing proved that I have French DNA like my Sicilian grandparents told my dad growing up. It was part of the family's oral history, but DNA has backed up their claim. Seems I had ancestors from the Bourbon region of southern France. When I asked one of my cousins how he felt about being French, he laughed and said the news was still too new for him to process. I guess now I am Gaelic, Garlic, and French bread, too. Why are Prosecutors Cutting DealsP As I read my Wall Street Journal last Saturday morn- ing, I was shocked, but hardly surprised, to see that many district attomeys across the country say they offer immigrants accused of so-called minor crimes like shoplifting plea deals to help them avoid deporta- tion. They purposely avoid reaching deals or sentences that could trigger an illegal immigrant's deportation. Supporters say it protects illegals from the dispro- portionate consequences of minor convictions. How- ever, I fully agree with U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions that such action is unethical because, unlike prosecutorial discretion, it treats illegal immigrants differently than those who are either citizens or here legally. On the 19th of April, the "most beautiful ship in the world" set sail from the Italian Naval Base in La Spezia to start the Train- ing Campaign 2017. So far, she has visited two ports in Portugal (Sines and Funchal), then, after 20 days of navigation across the Atlantic ocean, Hamilton, in the Bermuda islands, and three ports ofcaU in Canada: Halifax, Montreal and Quebec City. During the port visit in Montreal, the 79 one-term volunteers of the 24th Course, who had been on board since the unmooring from La Spezia, were replaced by the 125 Italian Naval Academy cadets of Livorno (including 11 foreign cadets). Navy cadets learn the basics of seamanship, putting into practice what has been stud- ied so far in the books by get- ting familiar with the marine equipment, climbing up the masts, and using the sextant to calculate the position of the ship with the stars. They all have been splendidly promot- ing Italian excellence and will go on upholding the prestige of the Italian Navy abroad through cultural and promotional events in collaboration with our diplo- matic representations in host countries. More than 22 000 visitors in the various ports have had the opportunity to appreciate the Amerigo Vespucci's style, which is one-of-a-kind, and her time- less beauty. During her stay in Boston, the Italian Navy Tall Ship Amerigo Vespucci will be moored at the World Trade Center Pier and will be open to the public on the foUowing dates/times: ee all, JuIu 18% 4:30 - 6:30 pm Wednesday, July 19~, 3:30 - 4:30 pm Thursday, July 20~, 10:30 am - 1:00 pm Friday, July 21=, 10:30 am - 1:00 pm and 3:30 - 5:30 pm After Boston, the Amerigo Vespucci will proceed to New York, continuing to represent our country in unusual ports of call for the Italian Navy. About the Amerigo Vespucci The Vespucci and her sister ship, Christopher Colombo, were designed by the Marine Engineer Major Francesco Ro- tundi, director of the shipyards of CasteUammare di Stabia near Naples in Italy. The ship was launched on February 22. 1931. Since then, she has always per- formed her core training activity for the Italian Naval Academy cadets. The Amerigo Vespucci is a sailing vessel equipped with an auxiliary power plant, and is a full-rigged ship with three masts (fore, main and mizzen), all three equipped with yards and square sails; the bowsprit functions as a fourth mast. From 2014 to 2016, the Ves- pucci underwent a major over- haul period, aimed at restoring operational effectiveness and upgrading accommodation ar- eas and facilities. More efficient and eco-friendly electric power and propulsion systems were installed, reflecting the Italian Navy's commitment to environ- mental sustainability. For the Vespucci's "rejuve- nation" and "restyling," the shipyard.workers cooperated in full synergy with the ship's crew under the coordination of the La Spezia Naval Shipyard technical direction, notably its Shipyard studies Department. Since her entry into service, the ship has carried out train- ing activities every year except for the year 1940, due to war events, and the years 1964, 1973, 1997 and 2014 to 2016 when she underwent major overhaul periods. The Vespucci provides training not only to the Navai Academy cadets, but also to on-term volunteers and stu- dents of the Francesco Morosini Naval Military School. The crew consists of approxi- mately 270 personnel, both men and women. This year, a number of on-term volunteers have been embarked for the first part of the Cempaign to be replaced during the stopover in Montreal, Canada, by the Naval Academy cadets, who will start their summer training cam- paign. The crew will then total approximately 400 personnel on board. The Amerigo Vespucci has been a UNICEF goodwill ambas- sador since September 2007. QUEEN OF THE UNIVERSE MADONNA, SHRINE East Boston In Orient Heights hill there stands a 35-foot bronze stat- ue enthroned on a pedestal in a 90-foot tower. While at all angles the front side of this tower shows a grand statue of the Virgin Mary, the back side, from a distance, appears only to be a plain wail. The true purpose of this side of the tower is to represent the Lady Queen of the Universe. In or- der to improve the visibility of the Madonna Shrine from all vantage points, the Sons of Di- vine Providence want to install a grand neon illustration of the Virgin Mary. The image will sit above the extremely visible words AVE MARIA. The Madonna Queen of the Universe Shrine provides spiri- tual care for a variety of eth- nic groups. Accordingly, the Holy Mass and other Services, during the week and on week- ends are celebrated in English, Spanish, Portuguese and oc- casionaUy, in Italian and Latin. This project requires $30,000 dollars and the group has already raised half. The Madonna Queen of the Uni- verse Shrine in East Boston is looking for more donations and pledges to raise the money they need to improve their trib- ute to the Virgin Mary. All do- nations, as small as they may be, are greatly appreciated. If you are interested in donating, please send your donation to: Ft'. Angelo Quadrini F.D.P 150 Orient Ave. Boston, MA 0212~1281 Checks are payable to: Ma- donna Shrine Inc. (A Regis- tered Charity # 800 663 723). In addition, donations are tax deductible.
