POST-GAZETTE, JULY 20, 2012 Page 11 Road Trip by Bennett Molinari and Richard Molinari "You have to come visit us," with these words our cousin Ethel, who lives on Long Island, set the wheels in motion to one of the best weekends we've spent in many years. We try to make it down to Long Island to visit Ethel, her husband Larry and their children at least twice a year, usually we take the train and within seven hours we are at their doorstep ready for what is always a delightful visit. We decided, rather than take the train this time we would drive, it had been years since we made the drive to New York by car and we were anxious to see how things had changed along the route which was once so familiar to us. It would also be a good test of the hybrid car we recently bought, it is full of "bells and whistles" and is supposed to give great gas mileage, furthermore, we purchased this car with a GPS guidance system which the dealer promised would make finding our way to Ethel's a "snap" despite the fact that both of us have no sense of direction. The convenience of driving to Ethel and Larry's imme- diately became apparent when we began purchasing all sorts of gifts and Italian delicacies from our favorite stores in the North End. We no longer had to worry about what we could carry; we could just load things into the car. There was wine, cookies and candy, an orchid plant for Ethel, who loves orchids, but most of all we could bring Sfogliatelle pastries which Larry loves but we always were reluctant to bring in the past never knowing if they would travel well by train. So we bought a dozen Sfogliatelle, just before leav- ing Boston, placed them on the back seat, cranked up the air conditioner to help keep them fresh, set the GPS system with.Ethel's ad- dress and we were on our way to Long Island. Once we were on the road, it became apparent that we were going to enjoy the five hour drive that lay ahead. It was a beautiful day for the trip, traffic was light and the scenery that unfolded along the way was so much more beautiful when seen from the highway. Best of all, there was the reassuring voice coming from the GPS system guiding us turn by turn every step of the way making certain we would wind up on Long Island and not California as would be perfectly possible with our terrible sense of direction. The trip went very well, the car has satellite radio so we tuned into a station that played music from the 30's and 40's, forgot how great Ella Fitzgerald's version of "Tisket a Tasket" was, time flew by and we were at the Throg's Neck Bridge leading onto Long Island in little more than five hours expe- riencing very little traffic, unbelievably the car was averaging close to 50 miles per gallon. Once through the tolls on the bridge, we tele- phoned Ethel to let her know we were just 20 minutes away. Ethel was amazed that we made it from Boston as quickly as we did; we contin- ued talking all the way to her doorstep where she was standing outside waiting for us. There were kisses and hugs, which were repeated over and over again with cousin after cousin 'till we reached Larry who simply asked, "Did you bring the Sfogliatelle?" We answered, of course, and Larry deliv- ered a great big bear hug, it was going to be a great visit. 111 qTorrh washington Street Boston, q(orth End Massachusetts 617.}42.2998 qracy Costa and )jnn Bova Coiner F_,a00 6re,,t foad and pirita in tile #iatricM IYartfi nd 87 Prince Street Boston, North End 617.523.8997 Maryann and Richie Longo Congratulations Framer I Framing With A Smile "Che Bella Vita" Custom Framing Original Design Over 20 years experience Soccer Apparel Italian Novelties Che Bella Vita Wear 347 Hanover St. Boston, MA 02113 (617) 227-1715 www.friendlyframer, com Second Annual Girl Friends of the North End The Second Annual Girl Friends of the North End will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012 begin- ning at 6:30 pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 545 Medford Street, Charlestown, MA.
