Page 8 POST-GAZETTE, AUGUST 8, 2014 • It's summer in Ogunquit and the East Wind is always so very refreshing on the beach. This summer that lovely breeze has also brought Mary Poppins to the stage of the Ogunquit Play- house, and what a magical" gift she is. Poppins, played by: Gall Bennett, who is repris- ing her role from the First National Touring Company, is, as Ms Poppins Would say, Practically Perfect as the-. • nanny who showsthe Banks family how to appreciate and show their love for each other. Bennett's voice is lovely, and her mechanical movements are a cross be- tween a windup toy and a mime, with a touch of a marionette tossed in. It is the perfect combination for the woman who may or may not be real. Mary brings toys to life, cleans a disastrously messy kitchen with the wave of a hand, and has a bag with an endless array of very interesting contents. These special effects are outstanding, but they are minor compared to what is in store for the audience as the play progresses. Tony Mansker plays Bert, the Jack-Of-All-Trades, and long time friend of Mary's. He joins Ms Bennett in the numbers Jolly Holiday, which includes a very kind and melancholy statue, and Supercdakag t xp complete with dancing pen- guins, and then joins fellow chimney sweeps in the lively Step In Time. In this number Bert literally dances "On the Rooftops of London Coo, What a Sight!" Review: Mary Poppins The Ogunquit Playhouse, Ogunquit, Maine ( Through August 30th ily. Rayson covers a broad range of emotions in this part. Christiane Noll, as Mrs. Banks, is able to see into George's heart and always believes in him. Her voice is lovely in Being Mrs. Banks. Sandy Rosenberg is very moving in the role of Bird Woman and is joined by Mary in the beautiful Feed The Birds. More special effects are on display here including pigeons flying over London and alighting on rooftops; absolutely wonder- ful. Rosenberg also plays Mr. Banks' childhood nanny Miss Andrews, better known as Miss Terror. It's no won- der George ended up such an emotional mess. As Mary Poppins makes her exit floating over the audience and looking down with her knowing smile, it is sad to see her leave, but then the knowledge that she has left the most important thing behind, her gift of• un- derstanding and love, brings smiles. This is a great evening of theatre magic to be enjoyed by the whole family. Let the magic touch you and just be- lieve in Mary. If you have any questions, Ms Poppins has an answer for you: "I never explain anything." No explanation is needed, just enjoy one of the nicest nights you will have this summer.
