BOSTON POST-GAZETTE, AUGUST 12, 201 1 Page 1 5 ! News Briefs (Continued from Page 1) At least now both parties up on Capitol Hill see the folly of proposing new taxes or "revenues:' as Democrats now refer to taxes. The president's bully pulpit isn't what it used to be, especially when the guy can only throw curve balls. Where's the Compassion? A woman was arrested af- ter her young son was struck and killed by a hit and run driver as both of them were jaywalking across the street and was spared a jail sen- tence following an outcry over her arrest. The woman had been convicted this month of vehicle homicide for not using a cross walk and could have faced up to three years behind bars, much less than the driver would serve in the same fatal accident. The judge gave her community service and the chance for a new trial. More than 125,000 signed a petition seeking mercy for the mother. The Georgia NAACP branch called the case against the single mother "a grave miscarriage of justice." Liberal Newspeak??? I recently heard another announcer on TV calling illegals "undocumented citi- zens" as if there is such a term. Either you are a citi- zen or you are not but you can't be an undocumented citizen. Liberals keep chang- ing terms in order to confuse folks. If they say something LEGAL NOTICE ....... I think some of these talking heads on these cable news shows should be called "undocu- mented journalists." Bay State Democrats Say "It Gets Better" The "It Gets Better" video organized by U.S. Senator John F. Kerry's office was able to get every member of the Massachusetts congres- sional delegation minus U.S. Senator Scott Brown to ap- pear in a new "It Gets Bet- ter" video aimed at helping gay teens who are thinking about suicide. The video starts with Kerry talking and ends with comments from U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D- Newton. Who can fault the idea about an anti-bullying campaign, but if Senator Brown doesn't want to appear in it, isn't that his busi- ness? It doesn't mean he's anti-gay as liberals are now spinning. I'm not sure how effective this anti-bullying video is going to be on those being bullied. I would rather see former bullied folks speaking to those being bul- lied today. That would have more impact than a bunch of politicians adding ver- biage to this very important issue. Brown won't be bullied into doing a video if he doesn't wish to do it, huh? Meanwhile, I've Heard They're talking about rais- ing the state gasoline tax which is already too high for most of us. Bad timing, I think, with prices going up- ward. This is an idea that needs to be mothballed by the Legislature and Gover- nor Patrick. Sales Tax Holiday Coming Soon Massachusetts resi- dents will be getting a break as Beacon Hill has decided to give us a two-day sales tax holiday on Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14, 2011. The idea is to stimulate the economy by getting us out and shopping. When this happens, Bay State resi- dents will feel what it is like to be New Hampshire citi- zens the other 363 days of the year. ' ~" ..... abfic~te!8/l~tf EXTRA Innings .. by Sal Giarratani think of the 1988 Baltimore Orioles. Not a pretty thought at all. Who is the Best Twin of All Time? The Minnesota Twins have been around since the 1962 expansion and have had some great players over the years; folks like Bert Blyleven who finally got into the Hall of Fame last year, Jim Kaat, a great starter in the Sixties, Kirby Puckett who was an All Star in I0 of 12 seasons and whose ca- reer ended when his sight disappeared and today's Joe Mauer who has led the ma- jors in batting average three times and who won the NL MVP in 2009. He carries a .324 career average. In my eyes the two top players in franchise history are Harmon Killerbrew and Rod Carew. Carew was an All-Star in each of his 12 sea- sons in Minnesota and had a ,334 career average with the Twins. He led the AL in batting average a whooping seven times and most hits three times. However, I believe it is Harmon Killerbrew, who started with the old Wash- ington Senators before they moved to Minnesota and changed the team's name in 1962, who is the franchise's best all time player. In 21 seasons with the franchise, he led the AL in homers six ~imes. The Hall of Famer ranks first in Twins history in slugging percentage (.514), runs (1,258) and ex- tra base hits (860). Lifetime, he hit an amazing 573 home runs without ever get- ting juiced up. A Little of This and a Little of That The Cincinnati Reds have traded struggling outfielder Jonny Gomes to the Wash- ington Nationals for two mi- nor leaguers. The Reds who had been part of last year's NL Central winning team have been struggling this year along with Gomes. Gomes at trading time was .211 with 11 homers and 31 RBIs. Red Sox hurler AIfredo Aceves who won on July 26 pitching 3.5 innings for his sixth win is now 20-2 in his career. He is the first pitcher since Howie Krist, who was 20-2 for the Cardi- nals from 1937-42. We're not hearing that much about Albert Pujols. He's only batting a sub-par .277. How- ever, he has hit 23 home runs too. CC Sabathia is now 15-5 with a 2.56 ERA for the NY Yankees. Perhaps, this is the year he'll win the Cy Young Award finally ... How 'bout them Mariners? Yankees Winning with Two Throwaways The NY Yankees keep staying inches behind the Red Sox thanks in part to CC Sabathia's great pitching but also two old guys named Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon who have made life difficult for the AL East. The two oldies but goodies have combined for 18 wins and ERAs in the low threes. Both signed as off season free agents years removed from prime time. 50th Anniversary of No-No It was 50 years ago on August 1, 1961 that Billy Monbouquette threw a no- hitter against the Chicago White Sox in a 1-0 pitching duel. In 1963, Monbouquette became the first 20-game winner I saw on the Red Sox. I believe Mel Parnell won 20 games back when I was still in pre-kindergarten. Sox Add New Pitcher The Red Sox have acquired Erik Bedard who is 4-7 with a 3.45 ERA for four minor leaguers. This 32-year-old hurler has often been in- jured beginning in 2008, in- juring his elbow, shoulder and hip. With Clay Buchholz still not right on the D.L., this move is probably smart. Ubaldo: How Fast They Can Fall Last year Ubaldo Jimenez started the season off like gangbusters. He was being compared to the great St. Louis Cardinals Bob Gibson. He was like 17-2 at one point in the season with a really low ERA. However, by sea- son's end, he finished 19-7, I believe. His ERA shot up- wards, too. Getting 19 wins in your rookie year is al- ways good but he tailed off pretty badly as the year wore on. This. year his ERA is high and he has a losing record at the moment. However, his long expected career with the Colorado Rockies faded fast, and he is now a member of the Cleveland Indians. Perhaps he will do better in the American League. Keep your eyes on him. .Leave the DELIVERY to Us[ With a Gift Subscription to the Post-Gazette, your generosity will be remembered every week of the year.
