Page 1 0 POST-GAZETTE, AUGUST 1 5, 2014 Fact ......... ..... ax reviewing the best i forgetting the rest GET ON UP: THE JAMES BROWN STORY - SOUNDTRACK Polydor/UMe This biopic of "The Hardest Working Man in Show Busi- ness" -- James Brown, was a film that should have been made many years ago. Brown put his mark on the music industry beginning in 1956 with his first hit "Please, Please, Please," and kept updating his mark with hit after hit. The film tells the story, but the music is the star -- the hits just kept coming with "Out of Sight," "I Got You," 'rry Me," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," "It's a Man's Man's Man's World," "The Payback," and "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine." Several tracks are the 'live' versions, but all 20 cuts are infectious, as the complex film tells the story of not only Brown's music, but also the moves and moods from the journey of his impoverished childhood to his evolution into one of the most influential figures of the 20 TM century. Boston fans can still remember how, in 1968, the day after Martin Luther King, Jr. died from an assassin's bullet, the legendary soul singer performed a live televised concert at the Boston Garden, in the hopes that he could alleviate the racial tension in Boston -- and he did! REBA - ICON MCA Nashville/UMe Hard to believe that country sweetheart Reba McEntire has been making music for over three decades, but one only has to see McEntire's list of 'hit' collections to confirm. Her ability to stay strong with her music and song is testament to her dedication to country music. 'Reba - Icon' is eleven songs that identify this woman, her honesty, sincerity, and ability to please with her music, con- tinues to this day. Pick your favorites from the 11 songs -- I did, and came up with 11! Included are: "Little Rock," "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter," "Fancy," a dynamite duet with Vince Gill on "The Heart Won't Lie," the humor of "Have I Got a Deal for You," and the questioning "Is There Life Out There." She can rock a song or swoon with a ballad, McEntire has always proved she could do it all. Additional beauties have, "How Was I to Know," the catchy "Why Haven't I Heard from You," "Somebody Should Leave," "What Am I Gonna Do About You," and finishes with the anthem "I'm a Survivor." BOBBY DARIN - ICON Capitol/UMe Walden Robert Cassotto a/k/a Bobby Darin made waves in 1958 with his single "Splish Splash," a song that led the way to many more hits before his untimely death at 37, due to a heart condition. Darin's life was a roller coaster, he never know his biological father, he grew up thinking his grandmother was his mother, only to Find out at age 32, that the girl he believed was his older sister, was really his mother. Before his tragic death, Darin turned out a host of hits in a short time, including the musical menu on this ICON album. Enjoy, "More," "Call Me Irresponsible," two live performances, his classic hit "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea," followed by "You're the Reason I'm Liv- ing" and "18 Yellow Roses." Darin had the ability to perform songs that hit pop, rock 'n' roll, folk and country music charts. The beat went on via "If a Man Answers," "Treat My Baby Good," his monster hit "If I Were a Carpenter," "Simple Song of Freedom," and the "Lady Sings the Blues" love theme "Happy." LINDA RONSTADT - ICON/Capitol/UMe Linda Ronstadt was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with impressive stats. More than 100 million records sold, with 38 Billboard Hot 100 singles, and 21 reaching Top 40, with 11 Grammy.Awards, two Country Music Awards, and an Emmy Award. Music-wise she was everyone's favorite with her golden pipes that produced songs as her # 1 hit "You're No Good," along with "When Will I Be Loved," "Silver Threads and Golden Needles," "rhe Long Way Around," "It Doesn't Matter Anymore," and "Rock Me on the Water." Ronstadt's collaborations were legendary as witnessed on "An American Dream" with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, "Different Drum" with The Stone Poneys, and "Someone Out There" with James Ingram, sandwiched around "Long Long Time" and "Tell Him I Said Hello." Linda Ronstadt, a living legend for sure! IN YOUR EYES - ORIGINAL MOTION .PICTURE SCORE Lakeshore Tony Morales composed the score for 'In Your Eyes.' Team- ing up with Brin Hill on the music for the film, and using Joss Whedon's vision for the "score, resulted in this 11-song collection. Morales was able to use a hybrid of string" instruments, piano sounds and a variety of electronic music to achieve the sounds to emulate suspense, and even'a feeling of romantic energy. The opening track is Andrew Johnson's "Go Get Another Dream," trailed by Ray Beadle's bluesy, grinding and even interesting "Temptation," trailed by Iron & Wine's haunting "Resurrection," with Santigold contributing the pounding "The Riot's Gone," and it all comes apart with Joss Whedon's composition "Crumblin'." Twinbed provides the foundation for "Trouble I'm In," Eddie Ray wrote and performs the upbeat "Glad I Found You," Opus Orange sheds the light on "In the Dark," and Matt Anderson offers "Fired Up." Closing out this intriguing soundtrack is Wildlife's frenetic "Stand in the Water" and composer Morales' original composition "The Break Up. .... I was there and celebrating with the society members. The main event on Friday night was The Temptations with original member Den- nis Edwards. They were on stage for over an hour sing- ing all their great hits. The finale being My Girl from 1965. Hanover Street was packed with nearly 500 folks swaying to the music. I thought back to 1965 too. When I was a drummer for a band named "The Silent Sirs" out of Roxbury. We did British pop and Motown and thought we were great. My brother Dominic played bass guitar and was 14 years old. I was the drummer at 17. THE BOSTON MUSIC MASSACRE On Saturday night, I trav- elled over to the Hard Rock Caf for the Boston Music Massacre where plenty of music zombies showed up in full attire. The event started at Noon and went on until 2:00 am. The stars of this show were definitely "Beawolfe," an East Boston legendary rock band and their perfor- mance was simply out of this world. SOUTH BOSTON ITALIAN PRIDE CELEBRATION Once again this week, South Boston's Italian Americans celebrated their Italian Pride with some great music this past Wednesday over at the M Street Park -- now known as Medal of Honor Park.
