Page12 POST-GAZETTE, AUGUST 15, 2014 EXTRA Innings by Sal Giarratani Don Drysdale Cy Young Pitching Staff This year, after the Tigers picked up David Price from the Rays, it made the Tigers the first team to have three straight Cy Young winners on the same staff. Justin Verlander was the 2011 Cy Young winner going 24-5 with a 2.40 ERA. David Price with the Rays was the 2012 winner going 20-5 with a 2.56 ERA. Finally, Max Scherzer won last year with a 21-3 record and a 2.90 ERA. I remember back in the '60s when the LA Dodgers had both Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale in their rota- tion. Drysdale won the Cy Young in 1962 going 25-9 with a 2.83 ERA. The follow- ing 5/ear, Koufax won the prize going 25-5 with a 1.88 ERA. In the '70s, I can remem- ber the NY Yankees had both Sparky Lyle and Ron Guidry. Sparky won the Cy as an ace relief pitcher going 13-5 with 26 saves in 1977. In 1978, Guidry looked like Super- man going 25-3 with a 1.74 ERA to earn his Cy. Is Owens the Future? Henry Owens recently Ron Guidry (nicknamed "Louisiana Lightning" and "Gator') earned honors from Baseball America by being named best pitching prospect in Double A. He will probably start off 2015 with Triple A Pawtuckett Red Sox before surely heading to Fenway, quite quickly, say most who know of Owens. This year with the Portland Sea- Dogs going 14-4 with "128 strikeouts in 121 innings. He reminds me of Roger Clemens when he made his Major League debut in 1984. I see big things for Henry Owens. Thank God Doubront is Gone Personally, I was always suspect of Felix Doubront even after he pitched a good game because he wasn't really consistent. You never knew which Doubront was on the mound. Often he reminded me of Alfredo Aceves and don't get me started on him. I hate legends in their own mind. Enough said. Masterson Still Looking to Land Somewhere Soon to be free agent Justin Masterson got him- self traded by the Indians to the Cardinals because free agency was approaching for him and the Indians wanted something in return for him. This season has not been kind to the 29-year-old hurler going 4-6 with a 5.51 "OUCH" ERA. The former Red Sox pitcher might even find himself back in Boston at season's end. He still could provide some good middle inning relief but only if the price is right. DIAMONDS 1 ROLEX ESTATE JEWELRY Bought & Sold Jewelers Exch. Bldg. Buttafuoco THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE ITALIAN PROVINCES. Over the past 23 years the idea of doing away with the established provinces may have, at last, found a realistic fulfillment. The last project to change the old provinces called for the establishment of "Metropolitan Cities." A Bill was discussed at a meeting of the Council of Ministers, which would change the present institutional system entirely. At last we may learn that large, populated cities will become "Metropolitan Cities," (or centers), an idea that was originally talked about in 1990. A union of Mayor's towns may now occur, hopefully creating a second level of com- munities capable of performing more efficiently as local administrations. The original intent was to reduce the num- ber of politicians as well as politicsl On January 1, 2015 the new law will become operative and the present prov- inces ought to cease to exist and the new "Metropolitan Cities" ready to emerge as organized entities. These cen- ters are: Torino, Mflano, Venezia, Genova, Bologna, Firenze, Bali, Napoli and Reggio Calabria. The Metropolitan City of Rome, as the capital of the nation, will function as a special entity. It seems to be an easy process, but we all know how simple operations can become complex in the hands of the Italian bureaucracyl HOW THE MAFIA THREATENS ROME'S SANE ECONOMY. The Mafia's business activities continue an ever- increasing process of 'merging' into the local businesses, a move that has raised serious concern within the authori- ties. To stop the Mafia's pressing 'incursions' into the local businesses strong with their available large capital, such as restaurants, department stores, etc., the National Police, the Guardia di Finanza (Fiscal Police) recently launched a raid to protect local businesses. Taken by surprise, the criminals were hit early one morn- ing. At least 51 people were arrested, giving a serious blow to two organized families, the Fasciani-Triassi clans. They were ready to take control of a few businesses by purchas- ing some stock, and later taking it over entirelyl The Police authorities' actions were positive. The City of Rome's Mayor, Dr. Ignazio Marino (a world-famous transplantation surgeon) had expressed his preoccupation over the aggres- sive financial activities of the organized criminal families aim at taking over legitimate businesses and upsetting the lives of honest citizens. Mayor Marino will do whatever necessary to protect the city's small businesses from the Mafia's infiltration tactics.
