Run date: 8/22/14 Derek Jeter Derek Jeter's Last Game Recently, the Winthrop Sun Transcript ran a great edito- rial on Derek Jeter of the NY Yankees that I thought was super. As the editorial stated, "Jeter has been a class act throughout his career and his next stop will be the Baseball Hall of Fame five years from now. He is one of the greatest all-time Yankees. Yes, we place Jeter alongside Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle and DiMaggio. Derek Jeter has been a symbol of all that's great and wonderful about our national pastime." WITNESS, HON. EDWARD F. DONNELLY, JR., First Justice of this Court Date: August 12, 2014 Tara E. DeCristofaro, Register of Probate Run date: 8f22/14i by Sal Giarratani baseball anymore? Driving by playgrounds, I now usually see baseball fields being used by soccer players. Back in the day, these base- ball diamonds would have been packed with kids play- ing baseball but that isn't happening anymore. Why is this happening? I wonder if the price of base- ball tickets at Fenway is so steep that lots of kids no longer see games at Fenway like my generation did. When I was growing up bleacher tickets were dirt cheap. A kid could see nine or ten games every sum- mer. That isn't happen.ing anymore. Kids are now into other sports which have become more popular, like soccer. Add to that all the scandals over the recent past about illegal substances being used and one sees why the attrac- tion to baseball is now look- ing fatal. Then of course there's the belief that base- ball has gotten too watered down. It is a perfect storm for other sports to grow while baseball falters. Hotlanta with Cy Youngs Greg Maddox won a Cy Young in 1995 going 19-2 with a 1.63 ERA for the Braves. The following sea- son, John Smoltz won his Cy Young going 24-8 for the Braves. Tommy Glavine won a Cy Young Award for the Braves in 1991. Atlanta Braves pitchers won six straight Cy Young's though the first of Maddox's four straight awards came while pitching with the Chicago Cubs. He's still rooting for the NY Yankees like many other Italian Americans who have liked the Yankees since the Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra days. (Photo by. Sal Giarratani) When I Think of Baltimore Pitchers Who comes to mind, I think Steve Barber, Wally Bunker, Steve McNally, Milt Pappas, Jim Palmer, but don't forge{ Mike Flanagan who won a Cy Young in 1979 going 23-9 with a 3.08 ERA, or Steve Stone the following season winning his Cy going 25-7 with a 3.23 ERA. I can remember Stone in 1980 because of his {what I thought) high ERA but com- pared to many pitchers after him, 3.23 doesn't look that bad. In recent seasons, pitchers have been making a comeback with innings and low ERAs. Best Pitchers to Me How about Steve Carlfon? How about Nol-an Ryan? How about Bob Gibson? How about Warren Spahn? Then there's Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale? Don't forget Whitey Ford, Juan Marichal and Ferguson Jenkins have to be on my A-list too. Others on my B+ list in- clude Wilbur Wood, Gaylord Perry and Catfish Hunter. Guys-on the mound like Camilo Pasqual and Ralph Terry were always over- looked, but were great pitchers too.
