All games are on Saturdays. Go to neaabaseball.org and click on Soccer Registration to sign up your child. We will run programs for boys and girls (Co-Ed) ages 4/5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12. Games will be played at Langone Park for the younger children and the 9 to 12 year olds may possibly play on a bigger field at Puopolo Park. Times will be roughly the same time as last year: 9:15 am for 4/5 year olds, 10:30 am for 6 to 8 year olds and approxi- mately 11:45 am for 9 to 12 year olds. NEAA will be looking for some volunteer coaches. Every coach will need to get a CORI check -- no exceptions. NEAA is also looking for one or two people to help with the setup each morning at 8:45 am and to fill in a few Saturdays. This is a great opportunity for a high school or college stu- dent who needs volunteer hours. The Registration fee needs to be paid prior to the start of the season. Fee includes team shirt and socks. Players must have their own sneakers (oi cleats -- rubber) and shin pads required for all players, io:'exceptlo. Imag- ine going from worst to first and then back to worst again? This takes talent, lots of bad talent at that. Farrell is looking like the second coming of Bobby V., isn't he? Right now, we have no ace in the starting rotation at all. Forget about Clay, with a near 6.00 ERA he is the anti-Koufax to me. Punching Up Lineup a Good Idea Too The Red Sox go daring recently signing up Cuba's Russney Castillo, a 27-year- old outfielder to a 7-year, $72.5 million deal. He is 5 feet 9 inches and 205 pounds and reminds me of Kirby Puckett. Put him in the lineup with newly acquired Yoenis Cespedes and Big Papi and the Sox have good punch. Some see the Sox making a bid to bring back Jon Lester from Oakland but I don't see that happening. Felix Hernandez Meets Gaylord Perry Recently, Mariners ace Felix Hernandez turned in 16 straight starts of at least 7 innings with 2 or fewer runs, breaking the record set by the Indians' Gaylord Perry in 1974. In the 15 starts by Hernandez, he went 9-2 with a 1.41 ERA. Perry in his 15 games went 14-0 with a 1.00 ERA. Jerry Lumpe Another Dead Yankee from My Past Back as a kid loving base- ball and co-owning a great collection of baseball cards with my younger brother, we had several Jerry Lumpe cards. He was one of those guys like the original Tito Francona or Jerry Temple who never made it to Coo- perstown and the only way this trio could ever get into the Hall of Fame is with an admissions ticket. However, they were dependable and made a difference on their respective teams. Lumpe played infield for the NY Yankees in two World Series in the 1950s and later ended up an All-Star second baseman with the Detroit Tigers. He came up in 1958 with the Yankees. He was traded in 1962 to the Kan- sas City Athletics and had his best season when he hit .301 with 54 extra base hits and 83 RBIs. He was traded to the Tigers after the 1963 season in a deal that also sent slugger Rocky Colavito to the Tigers. Lumpe was named an All- Star for the Tigers in 1964. He played 12 seasons in all retiring after the 1967 sea- son ended with a career .268 average. It is amazing how many players back in the '50s and '60s played part of their careers with the legendary NY Yankees. I would say what player didn't dream of wearing pinstripes and fol- lowing in the shadow of Ruth, DiMaggio and Mantle.
