Electrifying! DEATH WATCH (Blu-ray) Shout! Factory 'Death Watch' is a highly acclaimed 1980 film whose story is part human drama and part futuristic cautionary tale. The focus is primarily on two people: terminally ill Katherine (Romy Schneider), and Roddy (Harvey Keitel), who after having a camera planted into his brain, is hired by the producer of the TV series 'Death Watch,' to film a documentary of Kath- erine without her knowl- edge. A deeply moving and fascinating look at society in decay, and poignant as well, knowing that Schneider herself died tragically two years later. BOB DYLAN AND THE BAND - DOWN IN THE FLOOD (DVD) Sexy Intellectual In 1966 Bob Dylan began his first electric world tour. It was a landmark moment, both for Dylan and for the history of rock music, and it bitterly divided his audience. Backing Dylan on stage was an obscure group of Cana- dian musicians collectively known as The Hawks. In the months following the tour they would join Dylan during a lengthy convales- cence in New York's Catskill Mountains. When both par- ties emerged Dylan had undergone an artistic trans- formation, and The Hawks became "The Band'-- one of the most important record- ing groups of their genera- tion. Together, the duo also made legendary amateur recordings in Woodstock. History!I! The Federal Trade Commission wo for the consumer to prevent fraud and deCeption. or log on to .ftc,gov. The time has come, the walrus said, TO TALK OF MANY THINGS of shoes and ships and sealing wax of cabbages and kings by Sal Giarratani "TAKE BACK THE STREETS" SHOULD BE MORE THAN SLOGANS The recent violence in our neighborhoods hurts so much. As the first of three women gunned down sitting inside a car is laid to rest, the clergy and families ask for violence to stop. At nu- merous rallies, we hear poli- ticians like Mayor Menino or folks like Police Commis- sioner Ed Davis saying we must take back our streets from those that have turned the place into a killing field. Speeches and sound bites give little hope because actions speak louder than words. At the funeral for Sharon Perkins, Rev. John M. Borders from Morning Star Baptist Church in Mattapan stated, "We have to expose the people, call names of those who run in gangs, those who commit violent acts must be exposed to the light ... We cannot be afraid of exposing what we know to the authorities ... We need to learn to report all suspi- cious activity like we report a suspicious bag of luggage at an airport." Rev. Border's strong sermon was answered with a loud "Amen!" How- ever, amending a sermon isn't enough. It is far past the time for people to lament at funerals and then forget everYthing 24 hours late r like it never happened. A neighborhood is a commu- nity and a community is a shared experience. This means everyone is in it to- gether. Things will be as good as we want them to be and as bad as we allow them to be. Stop b*^%$#& and start doing. The police react but only the people can act. DEMOCRATS GO NEGATIVE ON TISEI Former State Senator Richard Tisei, R-Wakefield, was a very effective state senator in his Senate dis- trict and also an effective Republican leader up on Beacon Hill. Two years ago, he was Charlie Baker's run- ning mate for lieutenant gov- ernor. This year he is run- ning for U.S. Congress up in the North Shore against embattled U.S. Rep. John Tierney, D-Salem, who is mired in a family scandal gone federal. His family's le- gal troubles have cast a pale on his re-election campaign as he basically started act- ing. and sounding like Sgt. Schultz from "Hogan's Heroes." The Massachusetts Demo- cratic Party has launched a two-pronged attack on Tisei over Tisei's family's past legal issues. They have put up a website, www.Tisei Facts.corn. Republicans have their own website, www.How Also, Tisei just unveiled an- other website, www.Tierneys devoted to calling for an ethics investigation of the eight-term Tierney. I AM BACKING BETH CHILDS AGAINST BIELAT Over in retiring U.S. Rep. Barney Frank's District the Republicans are having a primary between Sean Bielat, who almost took down Frank two years ago and Beth Childs, a Republican from Brookline. I've known Childs for over 25 years. I see her as a moderate Re- publican. Meanwhile, Bielat is a hard-line conservative and Tea Party favorite. I find him to be a Conservative wing-nut, too far out of the mainstream for this'social conservative. Can anyone beat Jo-Jo-J0Kennedy is anybody's guess. Who is the most qualified in this race is an open question. This House district runs from lib- eral Newton and Brookline down to Wrentham, North Attleboro, Plainville to the Rhode Island border, which is much more Republican country. This district was once held for decades by former Republican Speaker Joe Martin from North Attleboro. I will be rooting for Childs in this race. Hopefully, she will go on to that matchup with the Kennedy Dynasty. WALGREENS WANTS WHAT IN DOWNTOWN CROSSING? Walgreens is hoping to open its Boston flagship store this fall in Downtown Cross- ing at the old Borders Book- store site across from the Old South Meeting House on Washington Street. The Illi- nois drugstore chain is seeking to sell alcohol. There's a law in Boston pre- venting drugstores from sell- ing cigarettes because smok- ing is bad for you. I don't think alcohol sales seem appropriate for a drugstore either. If you can sell beer, why not sell cigarettes too? Supporters included the Midtown Park Plaza Neigh- borhood Association as is the Downtown Boston Bus-iness Improvement District folks too. Rosemary Sansone is the president of the latter group and stated, 'We feel they are a reputable com- pany ... With a growing num- ber of residents in the dis- trict, it's important that a number of options be offered to them and the Walgreens emporium will do just that." Besides beer, Walgreens stated it will be selling smoothies, sushi, wraps, salads, sandwiches and the usual drugstore goods. I guess that means, like, pre- scription medicines, which is what a drug store is sup- posed to do, huh? "NO REPRESENTATION .... WITHOUT TAXATION" ..... The above was an actual bumper sticker seen by me over in the Peoples Republic of Jamaica Plain. Apparently those politically correct liber- als have completely forgotten why we went to war against Britain and King George. Did they also forget the Boston Tea Party, Bunker Hill and they seemingly forgot the slo- gan, "No taxation without representation" too. The other day I heard U.S. Senator Scott Brown on the radio warning all listening that come New Year's Day, all Americans would wake up with huge tax increases un- less all of us storm the gates of Capitol Hill. We need to let Capitol Hill know we want them to act quickly to stop those coming tax hikes.
