FREEBIF~ FOR EBT TAKERS? Gov. Charlie Baker has decided to push for %ultural experiences" for EBT card hold- ers under a plan that would hand out free or hugely dis- counted tickets to cultural institutions like the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Science, and the New England Aquarium. Baker, not to be con- fused with Faker, thinks free- bies to folks on the take from government will be able to push themselves out of poverty if the rest of us working stiffs pony up for them with our taxes. I guess only the takers deserve cultural experiences, huh? A GREAT MURAL ON PARIS STREET Two weeks ago, Mayor Walsh joined the City's Office of Immi- grant Advancement to unveil a new mural by Paris and Merid- ian Street in East Boston. The mural was completed by the city's Mural Crew on the Paris Street side of Dr. Dental and features East Boston immi- grants Carmello Scire and my good friend Veronica Robles. In these troubling times, it is good to see just how welcoming East Boston has always been to immigrants over the decades. This recent mural highlights immigrants from both Mexico today and Italians and Sicil- ians from yesterday and is also a very beautiful and powerful statement of what makes us America. CARDINAL RECENTLY BLESSES RENOVATIONS AT MOST HOLY REDEEMER After years of saving up to pay for major interior restorations of Most Holy Redeemer in East. Boston, parishioners attended a July 30~ Mass celebrated by Cardinal O~Vlalley at which he blessed the completed work. ~The work began in Janu- ary and was completed a few months back," said Father Tom Domurat. He also said there was a great turnout at this Mass. O'Malley said the church was built by Irish immigrants over 150 years ago and has now been restored by the newer Latino community for future generations of East Boston Catholics. Personally, I think the church's interior is now one of the most beautiful in the entire archdiocese. JUST THINKING OUT LOUD HERE Back when I was a kid, the only Puerto Ricans I knew were my Aunt Blanca and my four cousins who were Puerto Rican- Irish. It wasn't until around 1964-66 that Boston's Puerto Rican community was born in the South End and in nearby Lower Roxbury. When the Annual Puerto Rican Parade began, it was pretty small. But this year they celebrated its 50" Anniversary. Many ask why the community came to be during that period in the '60s and the answer is sim- ply that that was when those Northeast Airlines Yellowbirds started flying direct to Boston. Prior to that, the flights ended in New York City.
