..~,r BOSTON POST-GAZETTE, SEPTEMBER 11,2015 Page 11 by Sal Giarratani Colon Stil Pitching Deep Last week, Bartolo Colon of the Amazin' Mets pitched a great game and gave his teammates eight scoreless innings and hit a single himself in a 3-1 victory over the hapless Phillies. The Amazin's finished August with a 20-8 record, their best month in 15 seasons. And for the first time since 2008, September means something to this surprising team. Joe Jackson Still Shoeless Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred denied a re- quest from the "Shoeless" Joe Jackson Museum to re- open the case of the Chicago White Sox slugger banned from baseball back in 1920 for allegedly conspiring with his teammates to throw the 1919 World Series. This Black Sox Scandal still rocks baseball and it looks like Jackson will never make it into the Hall of Fame. Remember September 1, 1906 The Philadelphia A's beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1 in 24 innings. Jack Combs of the Athletics and Joe Harris of the Sox pitched all 24 in- nings. Combs e~en struck out 18 players. A Gehrig Moment Back in 1931, the Yan- kees "Ironman" Lou Gehrig hit three grand slams in four days. His third came against the Red Sox, of course. Pujols Hits Another Milestone Dello Russo Stadium on Park Avenue will be held on Friday, September 11 th, when the Revere Patriots take on Medford High School at 7:00 pro. Mayor Dan Rizzo, who led the push to build this $7.5 million stadium, will preside over ceremonies prior to the Revere football opener. I stopped by this new sta- dium two weeks ago-and the place looks great. This is the kind-of football stadium you see down south where foot- ball is king. Palmeiro Outside That Entrance Wag, Too Rafael Palmeiro Remember Rafael Pal- meiro? Great home run slugger and a member of the 3,000 hit Club. He got all caught up iri the Steroid Era and took the worst hit after allegedly lying.under oath. He was a great player in his era of baseball. But those en- hancement drugs took a big bite out of the sport. I still remember that .other en- hancement drug he started pushing in those TV com- mercials showing him at home plate swinging a big bat. When he went down in baseball, he and his big bat disappeared from those commercials, too. LEGAL NOTICE Albert Pujols Slugger Albert Pujols has been saying for years now, *I've been blessed my whole career. I was born to play this game and to hit." Recently, he hit his 555th home run that tied him for 14th place on the home run list with Manny Ramirez. He is also now one of four players to have had at least 10 career 35-home run seasons. The others are Willy Mays with 10, Mike Schmidt with 11 and Alex Rodriguez with 12. AS his manager, Mike Scioscia of the LA Angels sums it up, "Albert's obvi- ously put together a Hall of Fame career, but we know it's not over yet. He's got as much passion to play the game now as he ever had." Brand New Revere Stadium Opens Tonight Revere High School ath- letes, Pop Warner football players and cheerleaders, and Revere residents now have a brand new stadium to call their own. BY the end of the first half, Wade had completed only 10 passes for 89 yards: His last pass of that half was perhaps his best of the day as he found receiver Bobby Swigert for an 11-yard touchdown that was greatly aided by a diving effort by the senior receiver. Defense ruled the third quarter as both the Eagles and Black Bear defenses completely stymied the op- posing offenses. The high- light of the third may very well have been the punting abilities of Maine kicker ,James De Martin who punted 7 times in the game averaging 43-yards per punt. (I had to slip a Maine high- light in and that was pretty much it.) The Eagle offense finally picked things up on their final drive of the third quarter with a 3rd down completion to fullback Bobby LEGAL NOTICE Commonwealth of Massachusetts The Trial Court Middlesex Probate and Family Court 200 Cambridge Street Cambridge, MA 02141 (617) 768-5800 Docket No. MI15P4804EA Estate of BRENDA HOLMES Also Known As BRENDA J. From that point on, the game belonged to Rouse who literally car~ ried the home team, breaking away from mul- tiple Maine tacklers for a 21- yard touchdown run. The BC defense was spec- tacular all day, holding the Black Bear offense to 8 first downs and 91 total yards. Senior defensive end Mehdi Abdesmad and junior linebacker Matt Milano set the tone up front, combining for 3.5 sacks of Black Bear quarterback Dan Collins. And freshman defensive .back William Harris ended the Black Bears afternoon by intercepting a tipped Collins pass which enabled Rouse the opportunity for his best run of the game for a thunderous 45-yard touch- down.
