Page 6 POST-GAZETTE, SEPTEMBER 12, 2014 Caterina Fieschi Adorno was born at Genoa in 1447. St. Catherine's parents were Jacopo Fieschi and Francesca di Negro, both of illustrious birth. Two popes -- Innocent IV and Adrian V -- had been of the Fieschi family, and Jacopo himself became Viceroy of Naples. Catherine was an extraor- dinarily prayerful, holy child, with a wonderful love of Christ's Passion and of peni- tential practices. She was a quiet, simple, and exceed- ingly obedient girl. At the age of thirteen, she wished to enter the convent, but the nuns refused her on account of her youth. At sixteen, she was married by her parents' wish to a young Genoese nobleman, Giuliano Adorno. The mar- riage turned out badly, Giuliano proved faithless, Saint Catherine of Genoa violent-tempered, and a spendthrift and made Catherine's' life a misery Ten years after her mar- riage came the event of her life. She went one day, full of melancholy, to a convent in Genoa where she had a sister who was a nun. Her sister advised her to go to confession to the nuns' confessor and Catherine agreed. No sooner, however, had she knelt down in the confessional than a ray of Divine light pierced her soul, and in one moment manifested her own sinful- ness and the Love of God with equal clearness. The revelation was so over- whelming that she lost con- sciousness and fell into a kind of ecstasy. From the moment of that sudden vision of herself and God, the saint's interior state never changed, vary- by Bennett Molinari and Richard Molinari Life with God in heaven is a continuation and perfection of the life with God begun on earth. Towards the end of her life, Father Marabotti was ing in intensity and being accompanied by more or less severe penance, according to what she saw required of her by the Holy Spirit who guided her incessantly. No one could describe it except herself, which she does so minutely in her writings. She wrote about purgatory which, she said, begins on earth for souls open to God. NORTH END AGAINST DRUGS, INC.
