Picture Torey Krug, one of the shorter play- ers in the league at 5-9, on the ice with fellow defense- man Zdeno Chara, the tall- est in the NHL at 6-9. Torey chose to leave Michigan State right after the conclusion of his junior season, signing a free agent contract with the Bruins on March 12, 2012. As the NHL regular season wound down he played in two games, earning an assist while averaging 17 minutes of ice time. The bulk of the 20]2-2013 season was spent in Provi- dence where he saw action in 63 games, scoring 13 goals and adding 32 assists for a total of 45 points. And that impressive total was attained while being hin- dered by a sprained ankle for the first half of the season. But when the call finally came Krug was ready. That first NHL goal tied the score in Game 1 of the series with the Rangers. He followed with another goal in Game 2, becoming only the fourth Bruins player in history to score goals in his first two playoff games. He went on to score two more in the series, thus becoming the first rookie defenseman in NHL history to score four goals in his first five playoff games. Memorable moments in a splendid spring. The playoffs, of course, are a relatively short burst com- pared to tL. 11ar season -- which inches along at a much slower pace over the course of about six and a half months. It tests the full measure of a player through its ups and downs, back-to-back games, and (unlike the playoffs) the wide variety of opponents that are faced over its long course. Torey Krug, like the rest of his teammates, will begin that long and somewhat arduous regular season jour- ney next month. If they can play with the energy they displayed in the playoffs -- only three months ago -- it holds the possibility of being one great year.
