Page 6 POST-GAZETTE, SEPTEMBER 26, 2014 Fact ax reviewing the best: the rest BARBRA STREIS6ND - PARTNERS Columbia Barbra Streisand is an artist who's done it all, in music, on the screen, on the stage, etc. With 'Partners' the music legend has put together a dozen new studio recordings of Streisand classics and other songs -- with some of the mu- sic world's top male vocalists -- and several Grammy win- ners. Opening with "It Had to Be You" with four-time Grammy winner Michael Buble, she continues with "People" (Stevie Wonder: 22 Grammys), "Come Rain or Come Shine" (John Mayer: one Grammy), "Evergreen" (Babyface: 10 Grammys), "New York State of Mind" {Billy Joel: six Grammys), and "I'd Want: It to Be You" (Blake Shelton: ACM 'Entertainer of the Year' -- twice). Streisand's monster hit "ne Way We Were" is caressed nicely by Lionel Richie: 2 Grammys), "I Can Still See Your Face" {Andrea Bocelli: one Grammy nomination/ over I00 million albums sold), "How Deep Is The Ocean" {Ja- son Gould: Barbra's son -- actor/director/producer/writer/ singer), "What Kind Of Fool" (John Legend: nine Grammys), "Somewhere" (Josh Groban: 21 million records sold), and "Love Me Tender" with the late Elvis Presley: Best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music/600 million units sold. This album could have easily been titled 'Greatest Hits!' TIM McGRAW - SUNDOWN HEAVEN TOWN Big Machine The number 13 is often considered to be 'unlucky' -- but in the case of Tim McGraw's 134 studio album, 'Sundown Heaven Town,' it sounds like it will be 'lucky' for him, and Big Machine Records. For fans of the true country sound -- this album is 'Heaven' -- and sure to add to his count of 54 Top 10 hits. Tim's co-producer Byron Gallimore brings out the best of Tim on tracks that include the raucous "Overrated," the bright- ness of "City Lights," the current single "Shotgun Rider," trailed by the cloud of "Dust," slowing the pace for the emo- , tional "Diamond Rings and Old Barstools," and the cure-all "Words Are Medicine." Already with three Grammy's, Tim just keeps the hits coming. The pensive "Sick Of Me" maintains the mood, followed by his hit with Faith, "Meanwhile Back At Mama's," plus the funky "Keep On Truckin," the touching "Last Turn Home," the New England flavored "Portland Maine," the potential single tiffed "Lookin' For That Girl," and the bal- lad gem "Still On The Line." G.B.F. - MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK Lakeshore 'G.B.F.' is about two friends in search of a way to 'come out' -- each with a much different approach. The music for this movie is a unique mix that includes Canada's Dragonettes' "Our Summer" from their 2010 album 'Mixin' to Thrill,' American pop singer Veva serves up "H.E.R.," the dance club favorite "Body Work" (Morgan Page with Tegan and Sara), "Go!" the club mix of the now defunct Tones On Tail, the toe- tapping "Friday Nights" (Viceroy and French Horn Rebellion), English musician Neil Halstead contributes "Hey Day- dreamer)," and CSS does the honors with "Alala." Second half happenings come out via "Too Hot" (Hey Willpower), indie- poppers Royal Teeth put a bite into "Wild," Hi Fashion glows with "Lighthouse," and Tegan and Sara score with "Closer." Soundtrack ending comes via the upbeat "Gay Best Friend" from 'Heven' Helen Vergara, and a super cover of Spandau Ballet's 1980s hit "True" from Glacial Walls. BRYAN ADAMS - TRACKS OF MY YEARS Verve It has been six years since Bryan Adams had released a studio album. He celebrates his return with a diverse col- lection of time-honored classics from the 50's, 60's and 70's. Adams collection of ten cover songs is capped by his new track - "She Knows Me" a typical ,geat! song-from Bryan. Additional cuts have, The Beatles' "Any Time At All," Ray Charles' "I Can't Stop Loving You," The Manhattans' "Kiss and Say Goodbye," and Bob Dylan's' "Lay Lady Lay." Adams explained that the hardest part of making this album was the selection of songs, and you can hear that he made some great song choices. Chuck Berry's "Rock & Roll Music" continues the covers on the second half; along with Creedence Clearwater's "Down On The Corner," The Association's "Never My Love," Bobby Hebbs' "Sunny," Smokey Robinson's "The Tracks Of My Tears," and the fi- nale has Adams taking Brian Wilson's classic "God Only Knows" and makes it his own. THE GIVER - MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK Sony Classical The Giver' is composed by two-time Academy-award nomi- nee Marco Beltrami. His background in concert composi- tion and his mastery of a big range of orchestral effects is evident in this score, which calls for predominantly pensive moods. Beltrami's combination of shimmering, ethereal sounds in the main titles, then onto orchestration in "Jonas Gets the Gig" and "First Memory," floating into the liquid melody of "Color." The moods changed as on the drumbeats of "Happiness and Pain," with the second half of the album expressing the developing conflicts of the movie as heard on the martial percussion and metallic threat of "War," the dis- sonance of "Accelerated Training," and the excitement of "Escape From The Nursery" and "Capturing Jonas." Beltrami used choral effects and a lovely string solo to bring unity and a calming conclusion to the score. Two top positions were restaffed. Why? No one knows. The Governor's Office just says Patrick had lost confidence in the individuals replaced. Don't the taxpayers have a right to know what gives here? Why were two indi- viduals let go besides his "loss of confidence" quip? Don't we have a right to know? What happened, to Patrick's transparency? Since the closing of Mt. Carmel Church, this beau- tiful tradition continues every year at the Madonna Queen of the Universe Shrine (Don Orione). Once again this past Sunday, the tradition continued as a large crowd packed the pews to honor the Blessed Mother. It continues to be a big deal to East Boston's Italian American community and hopefully will for decades to come.
