Six classes introduce the distinct and exciting cuisines of six Italian regions. Each class lasts 4 hours. You will cook in a newly-equipped kitchen at the Dante Alighieri Society in Kendall Square, Cambridge, and enjoy your meal in intimate and beautiful surroundings. Each 1-day class is $90 for individual students. Couples discount at 50% for second couple member. If you want it all, it is only $430 for the complete six-class course. All menus include an appetizer, one or two entrees, and/or dessert. A wine pairing with the food will also be provided! This years' honorees: Joseph Caruso (posthumously d.March 5, 2008) and Theresa Raso. Joseph Caruso, was an activist who worked to, save the.West End during urban renewal in the late 1950s. He Was born in Italy and moved to the West End with his family when he was 7. When the city decided to- raze the neighborhood, Mr. Caruso made the area's preservation his goal. With five of his friends, Mr. Caruso, who lived with his family on Green Street above a fish market, started a committee to save the West End and turned a store on Staniford Street into the committee headquarters The committee sent out fliers to rally resident& Herbert Gans, a professor at Columbia University and author of the Urban Vi//agers said: "This was a time when local neighborhood activism was unknown. They [the committee] labored bravely." In the 1980s Mr. Caruso continued working to preserve West End history by helping Jim Campano establish, a West End newsletter. Theresa Raso grew up in South Boston and married former West Ender.Vincent 1961. They lived in Acton for most of their marriage raising 4boys. Theresa taught school in Cambridge and later worked as an accountant while raising a family. In 1996, after her children had grown up, she and her husband Vinnie moved to Whittier Place in the West End. Immediately she got involved with St. Joseph's Church and also volunteered with Neighborhood Action (now Oasis) to help feed the homeless. A few years later she puther accounting skills towork as Iongtime treasurer of both the West End CMcAssociation and the West End Community Center; Theresa is also one of the founders and organizers of the West End Children's Festival.
