DeCristofaro, Register of Probate R',J,n date: 9/28/12 up when the Orioles were always at the top or near it, a very dominating team with great pitchers, fielders and sluggers. They are seem- ingly headed for postseason action. My dream is to see them in the World Series this year. Sign Up the Cos? Recently actor Bill Cosby showed up at Fenway in a Red Sox uniform. He was sit- ting in the dugout offering hitting tips to young players. He even threw out the cer- emonial first pitch. Perhaps the Red Sox can sign him up as a new starting pitcher in the rotation. We might not win too many games,'uiPilt least we'd be enjoying some fun watching this team again. Paw Sox Win International League Title The Boston Red Sox ^%$#*& this year but at least the Paw Sox were look: ing good. Perhaps it means something good for the big club's future. During the month of August when the Sox went 9-20 here, we should have sent them down to Pawtucket and put the Paw Sox on a bus heading north on 95. Remembering Tom Cheney from the Washington Senators Fifty years ago, Tom Cheney was a pitcher with the old Washington Senators who struck out 21 Baltimore Orioles batters over 16 innings. It remains a game record to this day, and also, no pitcher has thrown as many innings in a game since. He was 31 years old and near the end of his career. Tom passed away in 2001. While pitching in that game, he didn't even know the records he was approach- ing. He just thought he was doing his job. His manager tried taking him out and he said he was staying in to finish the game. Overall, he was 19-29 with a 3.77 ERA over eight seasons and three teams. In that 1962 game there were only 4,098 fans at Memorial Stadium to watch that gem. Since 1962, three pitchers have struck out 20 'batters in a 9 inning game (Roger Clemens twice, Kerry Wood and Randy Johnson), but nobody ever topped Cheney, nor will they ever. They didn't have a pitch count back 50 years ago and only God knows how many pitches he threw in that 16 inning complete game victory. Branch Rickey Award Winner is ... The NY Mets R,A.
