WWW.BOSTON POST(;AZETTE.COM SHERIFF TOMPKINS KNOWS WHAT TO DO Recently, Sheriff Steve Tompkins won re-election with ease. He worked very hard during the campaign and it paid off at the primary. The Suffolk County Sheriff Department runs two cor- rections facilities, South Bay and Nashua Street: The de- partment has the responsi- bility of care, custody and control of those being held. 85 percent are sentenced because of drug use, 42 per- cent have some form of men- tal illness and 65 percent are Latino or African American; Tompkins, since appointed to the job~ faces a challenge of making sure that those who are incarcerated never return, rather becoming con- tributing members of soci- ety.. As opposed to sheriffs in other parts of the country, here in this region, the job of a sheriff isto push educa- tion and to advocate for resources to address detox and mer/tal health issues: The bottom line for Tomp- kins is to stem the tide .of recidivism, " " He views the returning of any inmate as a failure of the. system, which is why he is a reformer trying to keep people out from behind .bars. I 10ok forward to Tompkins -putting the election behind him and working-to help make society safer for all including for those who made :some wrong turns in their lives. OMG, GET. A LIFE, THIS ISN'T TV Recently, tread the .sad news story .about Freddie; a Boston carriage horse who reportedly dropped dead on the job at a Watertown func- tion. It was very sad. I thought of the horse who was rather old as far: as horses go. I see those tour- ist horse carriages all the time around Quincy Market and know that drivers love their horses. It must have been horrible to see Freddie just drop dead like that. However. a letter writer, who apparently is opposed to horse-drawn carriages. called on Massachusetts officials to exhume the body and do a full investigation. Sounds like a' cross between "CSI-Boston" and "Law & Order SVU." You would think the prompt burial meant that there might have been foul play. OMG, life isn't a TV cop show all the time. SF.,AN IIANNITY RADIO SHOW BACK ON BOSTON RADIO The Sean Hannity Radio Show is back on in Boston on WUFC, 1510AM at 3:00 pm weekdays. It has been a while since Hannity's popu- Iar radio show has aired in the Boston market. It is good listening to him again. -Though recently, I had to ,switch him off when he started ranting about his dogs endlessly. I am glad he- likes dogs, but that's not why I listen to him or watch him later, on the Fox News Channel weeknights . Recently he hosted what he called a debate on corporal punishment with the Adrian Peterson story still a hot topic. Instead of moderating the debate, he sided with the pro-punishment conserva- tive and basically sand- bagged the liberal guy who said Peterson committed a crime by the beating he gave his four vear old boy. I actually was agreeing with the liberal guy on the issue and thought Hannity seemingly crossed the line by ganging up on him. MICHELLE CAME TO TOWN FOR COAKLEY Personally, I like it better when Michelle Obama was just ranting about kids getting too fat in America. She can cause little harm there. However, recently she showed up in Boston to help Martha Coakley raise funds to beat Republican Charlie Baker for governor: National Democrats want to hold on to this governor's seat badly. Democrats know that many Steve Grossman pri- mary voters seem to be slid- ing over to Baker. Coakley barely won the primary after having ~ large lead in the polls and Democrats are get- ting .nervous. can you say "2010 US Senate Race'???
