WITNESS, HON. EDWARD F. DONNELLY, JR., First Justice of this Court Date: September 25, 2014 Tara E. DeCristofaro, Register of Probate Run date: 10/3/14 Derek Jeter Gets My Re2pect for a Great Career New York Yankees Derek Jeter was a class act through his 20 years wearing pin- stripes. He was one of a dying breed of players who spent their entire career on one team. He will go down in his- tory as a Yankees legend like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and, of course, my boyhood hero Mickey Mantle. The New Timers said it best, "With his words and deeds Jeter never entered foul territory." In five years time, the Cap- tain will stroll into the Hall of Fame with over 3,481 hits and a lifetime .309 batting average. As the NY Times also stated, "And above these statistics will appear the face of dignity intact, under a Yan- kees cap. Bottom line." Wright Could be • Right for 2015 Steve Wright is a pretty good looking knuckleballer. He started the season on the D.L. and then ended up in Pawtucket posting a decent 3.41 ERA. He was called up by the Red Sox and posted a 2.67 ERA in six games. He also struck out 22 batters in 21 innings. His final appear- ance was against the Yan- kees where hepitched five solid:innings, giving up two unearned runs in a good start, If he isn't a starter next year, he might find a role as a long relief guy. Knuckle- bailers can last a long time. Remember Wakefield? He lasted 17 seasons, mostly as a Red Sox, but began his career as a member of the Pirates. Big Papi on MVPs Dave Ortiz recently opined that pitchers already have their own award, the Cy Young. He thinks MVPs should be everyday players. I beg to differ. Sometimes a pitcher is so dominating that he deserves both awards. It • happens often. Remember Sandy Koufax (1963), Roger Clemens(1986), Bob Gibson and Denny McClain (1968) to name a few pitching MVPs. This year Clay Kershaw appears on his way clearly to a Cy Young, but he is also in the running for MVP. This season he went 21-3 in 29 starts for the Dodgers with a 1.77 ERA. Impressive starts worthy of both awards to me. Time will tell. Ortiz has a right to his opinion, but he should re- member that he is only•a DH. He hasn't played the field for years. Kansas City Finally Makes Playoffs Not having seen post- season action since 1985, by Sal Giarratani Ted Williams accepted congratulations by after hitting a homerun in his final at-bat 1960 at Fenway Park {Photo courtesy of the Baseball Jim Pagliaroni September 29, Hall of Fame) the Kansas City Royals advance to ALDS on a i2th inning walk-off. I will be root- ing for them along the way during the upcoming Playoff Season. Don't Know About Buchholz Pitcher Clay Buchholz moved into team ace by default this past July 31, when Sox management got rid of both ton Lester and John Lackey. However, Clay is not an ace, nor does he really seem to have ace material-within him. He fin- ished up his season going 8-10 with a 5.31 ERA. Sox better work hard this off season getting some much needed pitching or 2015 will : be more of the same. nu the Wau ... The Boston Red made base- ball history this season. No major league team ever went from last to :first to last again, An historic mark not worth much. to anyone, espe- cially Boston fans. Two 20 Game Winners This Year Clay Kershaw, who fin/shed 21-3 this year for the Dodgers, was joined by Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals, who finished 20-9 with a 2.38 ERA. No 20 game winners for the American League this year. Baseball History Keeps Getting Made on September 28th I remember back in 1960, when a, group of altar boys from the Immaculate Con= ception in the South End went to Fenway Park to see the Final game of !960. I was there with my " brother Dominic and a bunch of other kids in the right field grand- stand. We were among maybe 8,000 fans at most inside the park who wit- nessed Ted Williams last ca- reer at bat when he homered in his last plate appearance. Lots of folks would later say they were at Fenway for the game maybe as many as 50,000. But most of the seats were empty as there was no Red Sox Nati0n in those years. Jumpstart to September 28, : 1968, It turned out that Mickey Mantle would end his long career at Fenway too, He had no farewell tour like Jeter had retiring in the off-season. He ended up going hitless In hisfinal20 at bats and did not go out with a bang but rather a whimper. Finally, this past Sunday, September 28th would bring Derek Jeter to bat at Fenway before calling his 'career quits too.
