Page 6 POST-GAZETTE, OCTOBER 12, 2012 Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque by Bennett Molinari and Richard Molinari Margaret Mary was born in the diocese of Autun at L'Hautecour, France on July 22, 1647. Her father was Claude Alacoque, a notary, her mother was Philiberte Lamyn. From early child- hood, Margaret showed an intense love for the Blessed Sacrament, preferring si- lence and prayer to child- hood play. On the death of her father, when she was eight years old, Margaret Mary was sent to the Poor Clares School at Charolles. She became bedridden for four years with rheumatic fever until she was fifteen. Upon her recovery, she made a vow to the Blessed Virgin to consecrate herself to religious life; she entered the Visitation convent at Paray-le-Monialin 1671 and was professed the next year. It was on December 27, 1673, that Margaret Mary experienced a series of rev- elations that were to con- tinue over the next year and a half. She was inspired by Christ that she was His cho- sen instrument to spread devotion to His Sacred Heart, instructed in a devotion that was to become known as the Nine Fridays and the Holy Hour, and asked that the feast of the Sacred Heart be established Mother de Saumaise, Mar- garet Mary's superior, re- buffed her in her efforts to follow the instruction she had received in the visions, she eventually won her over but was unable to convince a group of theologians of the validity of her apparitions, as well as many of the members of her community. She re- ceived the support of Blessed Claude La Colombiere, the community's confessor, who declared that the visions were genuine. Mother Melin was subse- quently elected Superior of Saint Margaret's commu- nity in 1683; Margaret Mary was then named her assis- tant. She became Novice Mistress, saw the convent observe the feast of the Sacred Heart privately be- ginning in 1686, and two years later, a chapel was built at the Paray-le-Monial to honor the Sacred Heart. Observation of the feast of the Sacred Heart spread to other Visitation convents. Margaret Mary died at the Paray-le-Monial on October 17, 1690 and was canonized in 1920. Her short devotional writ- ing, La Devotion au Sacr6- Coeur de Jesus (Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus), was published posthumously.
