POST-GAZETTE, OCTOBER 14, 2011 Page 5 GIRL-FRIENDS OF THE NORTH END Reunion Banquet a Huge Success On Saturday, September 10, 2011, 256 "girlfriends" of the North End came together for a reunion at St. John's School cafeteria to renew their childhood friendships and share stories of a joyful time growing up in the North End area of Boston. The affair, organized by Francine Capodilupo Gannon and her committee of Carol Langone Catanzaro, Diane Passero Pesaturo and Christina Penta, was a success because of the overwhelm- ing response of the women ranging in age from 20 to 87 who were eager and delighted in partici- pating in such an auspicious time. Some comments from the ladies who attended: "Incredible company, how blessed we are," said Marie Deramo Darrigo; "... doesn't matter where, just being together is so special," said Carol All over 80 years old. Sardone Memishian; "I had such a wonderful time seeing so many friends and catching up" and" thoughts of all those friends who have departed also entered my mind, even amid all the chaos, and how much they would have enjoyed the evening as well," said Margie Semenza Bartolo; "good vibes, very uplifting experience," said Johanna Brogna; 'I'here's a special bond between North End girls that cannot be broken" said Eileen Cianci. Gleeful shouts of women recognizing each other after so many years were quite common and a joy to hear, according to Christina Penta. The women recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, and after a prayer, led by the ladies of a certain age (80+ years old), everyone sat down to a delicious meal catered by Spinelli's. They then played a game of trivia about the North End. Win- ners took home a book about the North End. For all the good work Francine did in organiz- ing the reunion, she was surprised and delighted when her committee presented her with a gift basket containing golfing items and some wine. Fran declared her favorite item in the basket was a golf towel inscribed "Girlfriends North End Reunion 9/10/11". According to the organizers, thanks go to the following vendors who donated to the event and made the evening a success: Annette Mercogliano and Angelo Papa of Mike's Pastry; Anna of Romano Florist; and Vinny Cicci of Gio's Deli of Danvers for donating the water. Everyone agreed it was the best reunion ever and can't wait until next year's North End Girlfriends Reunion. A photo montage DVD of the "Girlfriends of the North End" and a video of that memorable night will each be available.
