Page 6 POST-GAZETTE, NOVEMBER 2, 2012 Why Am ! So Disheartened? by Pat Moreno My distress has grown con- sistently over the past four years with the failures and lack of transparency in our president. I am a veteran who joined the military in part out of pride for my coun- try and equally because I felt that my service time to my country was an obligation, a duty in exchange for my freedoms. My political memory and fledgling savvy goes far back to President Truman. I have found fault and favor with each president since. For most of those years I was a committed Democrat or an Independent. This president has destroyed any of my re- maining faith in the Demo- cratic Party. Very early on I was troubled by his refusal to not only re- lease his personal records but to retain legal assistance to have those records sealed. Why? The promised trans- parency in government has been paid lip service only, conspicuously so with the manner in which Obama- care was made law. Yes, I do believe that his apology tour was real and offensive to the untold num- ber of Americans who have given their lives for liberty around the world. Even my basic economic skills told me that the Stimulus and TARP were wrong. I could not help but ques- tion the many nefarious characters associated with his past or the many ques- tionable character traits of his appointed "czars." But all of this pales in comparison with the current Benghazi cover-up. His failed presidency has most unex- pectedly been brought to the clear light of day. With a drone relaying scenes of the massacre taking place in real time to the Situation Room at the White House and resources available in the area to help mission per- sonnel under deadly fire as well as two Navy Seals who volunteered their lives to help, over a period of several hours, our president did nothing! Mr. and Mrs. Woods, par- ents of Navy Seal Tyrone Woodsl deserve an explana- tion for the needless loss of their son as well as the sor- did remark of Vice-President Biden about their son! Why, can any American but wonder, does our presi- dent refuse a five million dol- lar offer to any charity of his choice by Mr. Trump, just to release his personal records? What, one must wonder, can he be possibly hiding? We have lost position in the world hierarchy of power. It can perhaps be argued that this process began as a trickle some time ago. But for the past four years we have been in something akin to freefall. The deficit is enormously troublesome. It is true that our position in the world and any hoped for respect is inextricably tied to our economic strength or weakness. Our huge deficit defines our weakness. A will- ingness to spend and grow government is a Democratic weakness. Democrats have great difficulty in providing a yearly budget. Their short- comings give me faith in the Republican Party. Basic con- servative values are desper- ately needed, as opposed to blatant and inconsequential expenditures and experi- ments, in order to set our country aright again. I have become a Republi- can because this current president and administration have given me nothing to believe in and much cause for distrust. This president has in so many ways opposed those time honored and re- spected policies which have made America the great country that hold all of my pride. It may well be his inability to govern as well as his disoriented socialist bent that makes him so un-Amer- ican. America's greatness need not be further dimin- ished, but restored instead. America, choose carefully! Letter to the Editor ... WHY OBA MA HA S To the Editor: There are many reasons why I feel Obama has failed us as president. A quick comparison of then and now has convinced me that President Obama doesn't deserve a second chance. In 2008, the U.S. unemployment rate was 7.8; today, it's a bit higher. The average cost of gas was $1.85 when Obama took office. Today the cost has more than doubled and promises to double again if Obama's "green" policies are implemented. Our jobless rate is 14.7% and nearly 50% of college grads can't find a full time job. Median household in- come has dropped 5.7%. More than 3.5 million women, many of them single moth- ers, have fallen into poverty over the past 4 years. Last month, the Bureau of Economic Analysis raised second quarter Gross Domes- tic Product growth downward from 1.7% to 1.3%. America now :trails Cuba in GDP growth! President Obama has had 4 years to change the course of things, but has only made them worse. There are 46.7 million Americans on food stamps today, up from 32 million in 2008. Welfare spending, fueled by the 2009 government stimulus, has grown from $563 billion in 2008 to a record 8746 bil- lion in 2011. The Treasury Department's newly released summary of federal spending for 2012 reports that for every $7 taken in under the Obama administration, $11 has been spent in return. Obama has added $5 tril- lion in spending to the na- tional debt, and wants the country's top 1% of earners, who provide the lion's share of federal tax revenue, to bail him out by paying higher taxes. This solution of redis- tributing income amounts to class warfare and divides ST. STEPHEN'S CHURCH ANNUAL MASS HONORING ALL NORTH END VETERANS All are invited to attend the Mass on November 12, 2012 at 9:00 am and join the members of the North End Post 144 Veterans of Foreign Wars at a brief ceremony following Mass. We will cross over to the Prado to the plaque with the names of those killed in action and remember those from the North End who gave their lives in defense of freedom. Americans at every income level. President Obama makes a weak case for re-election. He says his policies need 4 more years to kick in. This from a president who hasn't passed a federal budget in 3 years and hasn't submitted a comprehensive energy bill in 4 years. Four years ago, many put their trust in a "hope and change" candidate. It didn't work and now we're suffer- ing the consequences. It's time for Americans to believe in a candidate who will truly move us forward. It's time for Mitt Romney. Unlike Obama, Romney knows how ornn busi les, s -- : >fl~)ir ~ ~ - . ~: ,,;~r~i~ ana a government, ne's known for buying failing com- panies and turning them around. He rescued the '02 Winter Olympic games from fiscal disaster, thereby sav- ing the U.S. from global em- barrassment. As governor of Massachusetts, he elimi- nated a $1.5 billion budget deficit through spending cuts and fee increases. He didn't raise taxes. He championed investments in our state's public schools. He instituted a universal health care law for Massachusetts. In Mitt Romney, we've got a tested leader with a proven track record. I believe in Mitt Romney and his vision for America's future, and urge you to cast your ballot for him. Vote Mitt Romney for U.S. President on Tuesday; November 6th. Michele Caira Nortonen Wilmington by Mary N. DiZazz______ o Hollywood the Beautiful ALL THAT ZAZZ Ciao Bella, Cruising in our blue Mustang convertible on my recent trip to California I truly en- joyed all the glamour there was to muster up! People would stare and say, "Wow, who are they?" I am a sap for all the stargazing I did! Even the foot and handprints at Grauman's Chinese Theatre made me feel close to all the stars I love! A trip to Santa Monica led us to Marion,DaVi~s' guesthouse with pool. I could only imagine looking at the long row of windows the luxu- rious glamour that was pio- neered there! And oh the fun in the pool! The actors of days gone by stand out strongly in my mind! The days of writers! Upon entering the Holly- wood Museum and greeted by a Patrick Swayze look- alike I was struck by this Art Deco palace as it used to be The Max Factor Building. The first floor housed all the makeup memorabilia from the "For Blondes Only Room" -- Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball to Joan Crawford! Their hair dryers, their glassed-in mirrored vanities and the Iotl Even a telegram to Mae West inviting her to the lat- est Max Factor line introduc- tion from Max himself! Technicolor blood, grease paint and theatrical powder were some evidence of an era gone by. Does anyone remember the actresses' black and white photographs so perfect looking? The makeup was perfection. Many owe it to Max Factor. In 1932 the leg- endary Max Factor devised an ingenious invention combining phrenology, cos- metics and a scientific analysis to a women's facial imperfections. The Beauty Calibrator was invented -- also known in the trade as Max Factor with his Beauty Calibration Machine. The Beauty Micrometer --, proving that ~i natural ','Per- feclY Faee a myth. "Flaws almost invisible to the ordinary eye become glaring distortions when thrown upon the screen in highly magnified images ... the device remotely resem- bling a baseball mask, fits over the head and face with flexible metal strips which conform closely to the vari- ous features. The strips are held in place by setscrews, allowing for 325 possible adjustments. If for instance the subjects nose is slightly crooked -- so slightly in fact, that it escapes ordinary observation -- the flaw is promptly detected by the instrument and corrective makeup is applied by an experienced makeup artist" -- Max Factor Cosmetics Co., 1932 This is the only Beauty Calibrator in existence. The human face has flaws which can be recognized by this invention and then can be corrected with pancake shading makeup applied precisely to achieve the "perfect face." Imagine that! My quest toward facial per- fection is answered. After all my, Mom would say, "If the movies in Holly- wood won't hire me maybe the comic strips will!
