(;uarino With the 7-2 Patriots on a relaxing bye week, I decided to take a little break of my own. Instead of my usual article format we're shaking things up a bit with team related news briefs. PATRIOTS GAIN GROUND ON AFC EAST FOES Without playing a single down of football, the Patriots gained an additional one game lead on their chief AFC East division rivals Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills now lead- ing them by two full games. Both the Dolphins and Bills fell on Sunday afternoon to the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs respectively. Miami will now travel to Buffalo for a Thursday night matchup, the outcome of which will have the losing club dropping to .500 with a 5-5 record. The divisional race is winding down and the Patriots are cruis- ing towards hosting another home playoff game. RETURN IN SIGHT FOR JONES It looks like defensive end Chandler Jones is "making progress" towards a return to action per Head Coach Bill Belichick. Jones was injured in the teams October 16th win over the Jets. Luckily he did not suffer a torn labrum as many news outlets first reported. It looked, like the defense would struggle without their top pass rushing threat, but the trade for linebacker Akeem Ayers seems to be working out well for the Patriots. Ayer has provided consistent pres- sure on opposing quarterbacks tallying a sack in each game since being acquired from the Tennessee Titans. BETTER TO TAKE THAN TO GIVE The Patriots are an NFL best plus-12 in the crucial category of turnover differential. The team has 18 takeaways compared to only 6 giveaways. The 1983 Washington Redskins own the all-time NFL record for turnover differential with a plus-43. Interestingly, that whopping total didn't help Hall of Fame head Coach Joe Gibbs and the 'Skins in that seasons Super Bowl versus the Raiders, falling 38-9 to two former Patriots first round draft picks ciuarterback Jim Plunkett and cornerback Mike Haynes. WE BEAT THE BRONCOS, WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG? Besides a grueling remaining schedule, (@Indianapolis Colts, Detroit Lions, @Green Bay Packers, @San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins, @New York Jets, Buffalo Bills) it looks like the only thing standing between the Patriots and that elusive fourth Lombardi trophy in the Arizona desert are injuries. With Chandler Jones likely to return for the playoff run, the team will only be better equipped to take out the rest of their AFC competition and whoever emerges in the NFC. The team has had to patch things together the past three seasons due to injuries, the most damning being the traditional yearly loss of tight end Rob Gronkowski. I thought it appropriate to offer an Italian malocchio (evil eye) fighter the cornicello (horn) to help ward off any injuries/issues the Patriots may encoun- ter down the road particularly due to this article. We're moving on to the Colts ... • Saint Hugh (Continued from Page 6) courtiers, "if all the prelates of the Church were like him, there is not a king in Christendom who would dare to raise his head in the presence of a bishop."
